Today is the 10th of February. and as the golf ball of Time rolls down
the rabbit hole of Destiny and the half-eaten Mars Bar of Fate melts in
the forgotten pocket of my new cricket whites... it's Paul Bines,
Village One-Liner's birthday. Happy birthday!

This village will get [even more] demoralised if we keep on having all
these celebrations.
Happy birthday, Paul!
Was that what the new bike was about? If you'd like to come and have a
look through some of the bicycling gear catalogues behind the shop counter
you could choose something useful from them for me to get you: I know
better than to buy a man with a bicycle any bike bit without asking,
because it might not be what is wanted.
And how clever of you to arrange to have your birthday at a weekend...

Happy Birthday, Paul.

Have a wonderfully fishy birthday, Paul!

> Was that what the new bike was about?
Not entirely - the new bike was a replacement for an old and increasingly
uncomfortable one; I saved up Amazon vouchers (pretty much all from
associates accounts on my websites and from doing online surveys) and got
one in their January sale.
Thank you for the offer to browse the catalogues - I shall certainly avail
myself of the opportunity. Do they, out of interest, have an lightweight
and portable, yet visually obvious flashing neon sign indicating to truck
drivers that there is a law abiding cyclist in their midst and that it would
be appreciated if they could possibly spare a little room on the road rather
than attempting to squish said cyclist into the kerb as usual?

Many thanks to all! I did rather well for pressies this year - the usual
few squid from my practical siblings, and a 'Build your own TARDIS interior'
book from my nephew, who is almost as practical as he got two of said book
for Christmas and opted to put the spare aside for my birthday!
A sort-of early bithday pressie to myself was a magazine from 1894 that I
found on eBay and which contains (I think) a previously cosidered 'lost'
E.F.Benson short story (I know, not many here like his work, but I do and
it's becoming a bit of a quest for me to track down his subsequently
uncollected magazine stories!)

Nope, still can't think of a joke for that. Happy Birthday.

> Go on, what did you get then?
A 21 speed alloy mountain bike with full suspension and front disc brakes,
alloy rims etc. My old bike was one of the really early mountain bikes -
the sort where they took a standard gents tourer frame and bunged thicker
tyres on.
This one is a lot lighter and shorter, so easier to keep in the hall. It's
not exactly top of the range (it's not even bottom of the range for the
serious MTB types; at full price it's in the mid-range of casual cyclist
territory) but it's fine (so far) for road work and the occasional muddy
patch and as long as it lasts until I have finished paying off the mortage,
by which time I can find a part time job for the bills a bit closer to home,
then I'm happy!
