I, as well as a few other people, wrote to Americana Books regarding the
Amber unabridged audiobooks read by Roger Zelazy himself. Americana owns
the rights to all of the Amber audiobooks but they have only released
the abridged version to date.
In response to my email I recieved what seems to be something of a
canned response which a friend of mine also recieved. However, it is an
encouraging canned response as it includes a survey of type meant to let
Americana know if there is a market for the unabridged versions of the
Amber audiobooks. I have pasted the survey into this post and I ask that
anyone interested fill it out and send it back to Mr Edward M. 'Ted'
McClure, Managing Editor at editor DeleteThis @americanabooks.com
Let's show him that it would be worth the trouble of releasing these
unabridged works read by Mr Zelazny himself.

Here's the story on the Amber unabridged books: They were published by
Sunset Productions before Sunset was bought by Americana. As with the
abridged versions, they have Mr. Zelazny reading. I have been able to
find the masters (on DAT) for five of them and production copies of six,
for a total of seven. (It's possible that _Blood of Amber_ was never
released unabridged.) What happened to the other three I have no idea.
We are missing _Sign of Chaos_, _Knight of Shadows_, and _Prince of
Chaos_, if he ever read them unabridged. We have had a good bit of
interest, and I'm trying to put together a proposal to the higher-ups to
republish what we have. Not enough interest yet. Some questions for
you:
1. What would you be willing to pay for new copies of the seven titles
we have?
2. What do you think others would be willing to pay for new copies of
these seven titles?
3. How many other interested people do you know?
4. What mass communications media should I use to invite interest?
5. Cassette, CD, (Video) DVD, or MP3-on-CD? (Probably cannot justify
doing more than one format.)
6. As Mr. Zelazny is no longer available to read the last three titles,
would there be a similar demand for the remaining titles read by another
reader? We could try to match the style (we have tapes of him reading
abridged versions of _Sign of Chaos_ and _Knight of Shadows_), but we
would not be able to match the voice or the subtleties of Zelazny's
reading of his own works.
7. If there is sufficient demand for the last three titles, should we
try to imitate Zelazny reading or go with something entirely different?
8. Would you be willing to setting up a standing order the seven titles
read by Zelazny? All ten? A 'standing order' is where we get a credit
card number from you and charge it as we ship each title - you are
agreeing up front to buy all of them. Much, much less risk for us, and
therefore easier to convince management that it's worth doing.
Go ahead and forward this to people who you think might be interested.

Your message is potentially misleading to readers because this thread
is about the unabridged books, and all ten books were not released in
that format. The first six were released unabridged (Nine Princes
thru Trumps), each read by Zelazny, and released on cassette only.
Blood was recorded unabridged by Zelazny but apparently never released
in that format. All ten books were released in abridged format on
cassette, and are all available again on cassette and now CD from
Americana. The first nine abridged books were read by Zelazny; the
tenth book was not read by Zelazny because he died before getting
around to doing that recording.
I have the first six books in unabridged format, and all ten books in
abridged format. The unabridged versions are about twice as long as
the abridged versions, which gives you an idea as to how much was cut
out in the abridged versions (ie half the story). I think the
unabridged are much better because the story is complete, as compared
to some very choppy editing in the abridged books. But on the other
hand, the sound effects in the abridged versions do complement the
story and enhance the listening experience (but not always).

You are correct. My message was misleading and I do apologize. I
was simply stating that it was difficult and took many months to finally
get all ten books in ANY form!

Which number were you phoning?
Googling the company, it is apparent that they are in restructuring
mode:
http://biz.yahoo.com/pz/060109/92090.html
I can't find any other website listing for them.
This page has phone and fax numbers for them, don't know if those are
the ones you tried:
http://finance.yahoo.com/q/pr?s=adbn.ob
They're still on the stock market, so not bankrupt yet.
I previously told them I'd like to buy Blood of Amber, whether it be
the master or that they just make a copy for me. They answered other
questions but never answered that one.
It's still not clear to me whether the unabridged Blood of Amber was
ever released or not. It makes sense that it must have been, because
unabridged Sign of Chaos was released. But then again, maybe somebody
forgot the sequence of books and neglected to release Blood of Amber.
I keep hoping one of them will turn up somewhere.
I noticed that mp3 versions of the unabridged books (1-6 and are
available for free on bittorrents, as well as people occasionally
buying them off of ebay.

In case I've confused anyone, when I originally posted in this thread
in 2004, I stated that only the first six books had been released
unabridged, and that Americana had the unabridged master recording of
Blood of Amber but hadn't released it. (Thry confirmed having it, but
had no idea whether Sunset had ever released it). I later discovered
that Sign of Chaos had been released unabridged by Audio USA (another
name for Sunset) and bought a copy. So, definitely books 1-6 and book
8 were released unabridged, I have all of them. But what about that
elusive Blood of Amber???

I am trying to call Americana Publishing, now Americana Distribution
(ADBN). The phone is 'no longer in service'. I hope the tapes of the
unabridged books are not lost! I would be interested in purchasing some
or all of them (for distribution), but I don't know how to contact the
company. Any ideas? >> Stay informed about: Amber Audiobooks Unabridged |
