Archived from groups: alt>books>david-weber (more info?)

Hi All,
I've been a fan of the Honorverse series for many years plus an avid
wargamer for over 30 years and the Haven-Manticore war seems so ripe
for a strategic level space wargame.
I started to sketch out some ideas a couple of years ago and got quite
far down the track when work pressures got in the way and my primary
game companion and tester (my son) went off to University.

Has anybody else been tempted or thought about simulating this? I've
seen the tactical level game (Sagami simulator) that has an incredible
amount of detail but it would be impossible to recreate any of the big
battles in the books (such as the one at the end of 'At All Costs').

It looks like I will be in a position to 'dust off' my ideas this
summer and I wonder if any one would be interested in helping me with
this project? This is NOT a commercial venture of any form - just a
fan's dream of refighting the interstellar war from DavidW's books.
For those of you who may have an interest or background in sci-fi
wargaming, the nearest comparison would be the 5th Frontier War game
by GDW from the 1970's set in the Traveller Universe or Imperium (also
by GDW and recently reissued by Avalanche press).

Thoughts anyone?

Geoff

used to be a board gamer myself and in a way it's sad to see the
boardgames fall by the wayside. computer games allow so much more
detail to be put into the games now that the death of the board game
is pretty much a done deal.

Yea - computer games are quite amazing nowadays - but there are still
boardgames being produced and it's possible for someone without state
of the art programming skills to design and put together a good game -
especially with the graphical and printing capabilities of modern
PC's.
I'm going to go ahead and do the game for my own interest and anyone
esle that's keen. Anyone fancy helping out with reviewing/proof
reading/playtesting?

I'd love to see what you've done and help out with any development, as
long as it's understood that nothing commercial is intended, as you
have said.

5FW is an excellent model for the strategic movement, and I have had
for some time an idea about an operational/tactical model based
loosely on Avalon Hill's classic "War at Sea/Victory in the Pacific"
game.

Shall we take this to email or chatter here?

I'd be interested in playtesting. I 'm listed for the computer game 'Semper
Fi' and several board games including GDW's 'Dien Ben Phu."

I might point out that, in some ways, Dave's entire writing career
derives from board games.

I sort of suspected as much! I Read Davids books based on Starfire -
could tell he was a gamer!

Anyway, those interested in helping me I will contact shortly. Anyone
else please drop me a line.

He wrote a long letter to "Starfire"'s publisher - which they wouind
up publishing (pretty much unaltered, as i recall) as an expansion
module to the game. Later he worked for them, including editorial
work on their magazine (which is where, i think, he met Stave
White)...

.... and me...

Dave produced a number of Starfire products for Task Force Games
back in the mid-80's to early 90's on which Steve and I assisted in
various roles.
