California weather - again

The Bay Area is mostly just soggy. As Megan said, it's not as big of a
storm as the last one.

We've had a lot of wind gusts, but not as bad as last time. We haven't
lost power, even. But we're definitely soggy. We got over 3 1/2 inches
of rain on Friday, and another half inch each on Saturday and Sunday.
That system on Friday was definitely the worst along the coast- it
wasn't moving east/inland at all, it was moving only North, and it was
HUGE. It was pouring and blowing when I got up, it was pouring and
blowing when I went to bed, and it didn't stop raining all day, although
the blowing and hail came and went. Saturday was partly sunny during the
day, even.


Jesse DID stop for batteries and extra flashlights in Palo Alto before
coming home Friday night, though. There was a definite shortage of those
around here.

It sounds like there was enough time between storms for the previous one
to drain away. Too often a relatively smaller storm coming after a big
one has no place to go - every thing is already soaked from the first one.

My son in Oregon called and said it was snowing last night. I pulled up
a ten day forecast for his city and it was rain and/or snow forecast for
the entire ten days. Obviously not eastern Oregon.

I left my LED Xmas lights up inside, strung across my living room. Just

LOL We'va had LED Christmas lights for 3 years now. The ones we got for
outside this year, however, are far superior to the old ones we have.

We think for next Christmas, we're going to get a pre-lit LED tree. The
prices of them have come down to about what it costs for a non-LED lit one.

Oh? They've been available in previous years? The LED Xmas lights I
bought were the first ones I'd seen...

Maybe I just didn't notice them in the stores, last year. I'm depressingly
good at not seeing things. (Shouldn't reading scads of murder mysteries
make a person more observant? Nero Wolfe, Hercule Poirot, Miss Marple, et
al, always notice all details, why can't I?)

I'm sticking with rosemary bush/trees, for now. Plenty of room in my
yard/weed-land for more nice smelling, drought tolerant shrubs.

Though, boy, I'm really wondering if this years Xmas bush will pull through
and get healthy. Indoor life did *not* agree with it, and it's looking
darn sad out there. Lotta brown, not much green.

Surely candles wouldn't bother wood paneling? I mean, unless you stick the
candle flame right on the wood...

On the other hand, candles + cats + wood might be a problem. :>

Eh, it's mostly sand. It drains fast. Certainly within 3 weeks, which
was the when the last one hit. There WAS flodding North of us, and lots
of street flooding because God Forbid they'd put in proper storm sewers
in California. They had to close Highway 1 just (as in 1 1/2 miles)
south of us in that spot they are tunneling around because of a small
mudslide. But there aren't many streams or rivers in the area TO flood,
and it would take a lot more than that to flood the ocean. *G* There
also aren't even any basements around here, which is what would really
have been effected by saturated ground.

It just might be May before the ground is hard enough to replace the
fence.

We used to have one of those lantern/radio/emergency siren things that
worked by crank, solar, or batteries. Unfortunately, it was a victim of
the car crash Jesse was in a few years back. We also had flashlights-
LED ones even, but our only lantern-type is sitting in the storage unit
where we usually need it. Honestly, I thought the batteries were a good
idea, since I have no idea when the batteries in the big MagLite were
last changed (if ever) but he was afraid we'd be out of power for days,
like our landladies were last time, and didn't want to be sitting in the
dark. He also wasn't happy with my solution of just lighting candles,
because of all the wood paneling.

Instead of a battery, a chemical storage medium, it probably has some
sort of 'super' capacitor, which has an electronic storage.

Popular Science just had an article on replacing a specific cordless
screwdriver's batteries with super capacitors for a very quick recharge,
albeit a short run time.

We bought some last year (2006) during the after-Christmas sales, so
they were definitely around.

IIRC, its supposed to hold its charge for 3 months. Its hanging by a
strap from the doorknob of my office. Occasionally, I notice it and
give it a minute of winding.

So far, I haven't needed it. No emergencies or serious power failures.

We bought them in 2005. We got some from Costco, some from Target, and
some from Walmart. The ones from Target are definitely the best of
those, and they've extended the line every year- including novelty
lights and the wire figures. I've also seen them at Lowes, Rite Aid,
Ace, and OSH both this year and last. They were in fewer places, but in
some ways easier to find the first year. Then PG&E started advertising,
trying to get people to switch, and they sold out FAST last year when I
just needed one more set. It was better this year.

The ones we got for outdoors this year, we got a Michael's and they are
AWESOME. They are the kind that have the different blinking patterns
(okay, most of them annoying, but still LOL) and I couldn't see a
flicker at all.

If we were ever at HOME for an entire Holiday season, we'd get a real
tree. But that never happens. This year, we were gone twice, for a week
each. My parents stopped getting live trees, since they are still
impossible to keep alive- they just die slower than cut trees. LOL They
thought they were doing something wrong, but know someone who owns a
Christmas tree farm, and he told them no, it's just the nature of them.

I did have a tiny rosemary tree one year. It died by February.

Yeah, I think it was the cat+candle thing that made him worry. Since I'm
not in the habit of leaving candles burning in a room where I'm not, I
wasn't worried about it, but he was. *shrug*
