Thirteen years ago today, I was in hospital giving birth to my
absolutely awesome daughter. I am so incredibly proud of her as she
is not only smart, but she works hard at school and at home. She is
also wise beyond her years-I have learned so much from her. And I
know that the people here will let me brag on her and understand. I
am humbled by the responsibility of being her Mum, and also grateful.
She is totally terrific (and now (eeek) _thirteen_), and so if you
could pray that the next few years we can maintain our relationship
and move it into the friends category as well as being Mum and
daughter, I would very much appreciate it.

What a very sensible wish!
Happy birthday to her, and yes, you have all my best wishes for the next
few years.

I know, but the relationship is going to be changing over the next
few years, as I relinquish control over her life, and she takes
responsibility for it. At least, that is the plan. I have been trying
to prep her for this all her life-starting with things like giving
her a choice of which outfit she wanted to wear when she was three,
to letting her pick separates from her closet at age nine (I did
point out that the blaze orange and hot pink floral pants and the
blaze orange and hot pink floral top made it difficult to look
directly at her, which actually, in some situations, might be
desirable, really) and other responsibilities and privileges.
I think my favorite recent memory was when she looked at a garment I
thought was very cute, and tried to figure out how to say it was not
to her taste without saying anything like, "Ick! I wouldn't wear that
if I was dead and in my coffin!" She is very sweet indeed.

I am still enjoying a moment when the youngest was about fourteen, and
appeared in my study just before an evening out with her friends, wearing
jeans and a t-shirt and looking, to me, just like any other girl her age,
maybe a bit more organised than some.
'Do I look all right, Ma?'
I looked her up and down and saw nothing too awful.
'You look fine to me; I like that shirt.'
She grinned and then suddenly looked horrified.
'Omigahd, I'm turning into a teenager!'
With which she rushed away.
Kids, huh?

A belated "Happy Birthday" to Caryl and a reminder
that not all teenagers are TEENAGERS.

<grin> only she has been "going on thirteen" for several years now.
To the extent that I started saying she was 12, going on annoying.
