Just finished this book and I have a few questions.

1) Was New Athens destroyed by a nuclear detonation? I thought the Overlords
had causes all weapons of that sort to be dismantled.

2) What would have happened if any of the last generation of humans had
tried to have more children? The book didn't seem to address this.

I've asked the same questions myself.
1) It probably was. I think anyone who really wanted could build one in
those days, as long as the overlords didn't interfere. Which they obviously
didn't in this case. Why should they?
2) It just has to have happened among some of the humans.
Plot hole? Well, for some reason it obviously didn't change anything, and
we'll never know why.

Anyway, it's a great book Smile

"For reasons which the Overlords could not explain, but which Jan
suspected were largely psychological, there had been no children to
replace those who had gone." A bit thin, but there you go.

Thanks. I remember that line now. I suppose having witnessed the (to them)
grotesque transformation of their kids might have prevented anyone from
wanting to create another one, even if they didn't know what would happen.
