My thoughts follow. And note that some spoilerish info might occur in
my post, but a lot less than is given by the site. /If/ you're still at
the stage where spoilers for TCOM and TLF matter, you have at least a
page of post to read before you get to them (so stop reading at the end
of this sentence to be sure), and you're probably wisest not delving too
deeply into the above site.

Anyway, those thoughts...:

I actually had to let popups occur to get into this site, for those that
are nervous about such things. But the Anthill Inside symbol made me
chuckle. Wink

(I haven't found a non-bells-and-whistles version of the site, which
could easily have held the same information without all the fancy
effects and music. That's be a branding issue for a start, and probably
leaves accessibility issues on the back seat for one reason or another.)

I note they have Wintersmith in both the main Discworld series
post-biography bibliography and the (otherwise /not/ mainstreamed)
Children's Series. I've a feeling they missed something or other but
(especially as they've put in OMWF collection and the Legends/etc
"there's a Pratchett story in a collection of others" list) I couldn't
put my finger on it without directly referencing ppint's lists and/or
Colin's site.

"Terry on Discworld Fans..." "Let me tell you about fans... Fans will
hack it to pieces as fans do, because it is there to hack to pieces.
[etc]" => As if we would... Wink

(Honestly, when some Tolkienite [on the other side of a not-necessarily
wisely started cross-group thread] accuses us of near sycophantism,
he/she ought to be around when we argue over the minutiae. Wink

They state Rincewind has had 40 years "attempting to reach even the most
basic level of wizardry, which makes him and Jason in or around the
right age for each other.

Twoflower's appearance is suitably close (ethnicity aside) to what I'd
expect. I await with interest how Austin[1] brings forth his dialogue.
/Especially/ during the bit he is speaking Agatean and cannot be
understood by the regular Morporkians.

From Trymon's character profile, they've obviously decided to bring the
concept "Dead man's shoes" forth in a quite literal manner. Wink

ISTR discussions on how they'd film the 'ring walking' in Wyrmburg.
Well, looks like they actually did it upside down. (Not "right way up
/turned/ upside down", but upside down in the first pace.) That'll be
interesting.

I got a bit worried when I read that it was "in two parts", thinking it
would be a 2x1hr production, but "two full length movies" (according to
what Curry says) is probably going to be /about/ right, with a bit of
Pratchett-sanctioned gathering up of the slack from the two books.
(Noting the third fully distinct thought in this list will still apply. Wink

"I've got a few scares to put on." Nice speeling eroor in the C&C
Interview with Bradley[3].

[1] First "Jason"[2] (having decided to skim over his honorific) and
then "Austin". The way I write it, it sounds like a couple of kids'
first names, not a couple of adult's surnames. Wink

[2] Noting that I already knew the story behind his stage name.

[3] Another kid! As is that "Lee" guy. Wink

Good choice on the casting of Cohen, I think. Twoflower? We'll see

Now when will this be available in the Land of the Free[1]?

I think he'll do. Twoflower is the archetypal tourist, not just
Asian tourists. He'll work just fine as a 1950s-American tourist.
(I spent some time searching the web for comments; someone somewhere
said Twoflower was wearing truly awful socks, but none of the pictures
showed them - now I'm curious. Do they match the Hawaiian shirt?)

Hmm, when was the first US showing of Hogfather? November the year
after it was shown in the UK? I forget. The UK DVD was out by spring
2007. I know Borders got their special-issue DVD in time for
Christmas 2007. (General sales DVD for Hf should be available in
March 2008.) So maybe in 2009 it'll be shown on US tv (at a time and
on a channel listed on a piece of paper misfiled in a filing cabinet
in a locked closet in the basement of the old town hall...) and then
in November 2008 the special DVD will be available?

Or maybe since it isn't Christmas-linked and the UK showing is at
Easter, it might be shown over here this summer and the DVD might
come out in time for Christmas 2008 - we can hope.

Do you not have multiregion dvd players in the US then?
Buy the UK release.
I own lots of US released dvds that I imported months before the films were
ever released in the UK.

I don't know. Maybe. But I don't know any way to find out except buy a
UK DVD and see if it works. Or do they say "multiregion" on the front?

That's it, you see, us UKians (and just about everyone else in the world
apart from the US) have gotten beyond the stage of being miffed about
how Hollywood staggers its releases and tries to enforce this by
regional encoding, and most markets[1] are now filled with multi-region,
region-free or no-limits-to-switch equipment.

The land of Hollywood, however, has been largely unaware of the
disadvantages and has never really had a groundswell of demand for
something that would allow regions other than Region One to be regularly
played, and occasions such as these highlights (for the probably
minority audience who wishes to take advantage of non-US primary
releases, such as our trans-Atlantic friends who have just spoken up)
the trouble.

I think the first suggestion is to do what a lot of 'us' tend to do, and
look for a site regarding regional re-/de-encoding of equipment and
check your model of DVD player on that. You may find a solution (e.g. a
hand-set key combination or perhaps a firmware update) that you could
apply. Or US-specific equipment might have never been given such a back
door, unfortunately, or even the opportunity to change it permanently.
Maybe it's an excuse (for those who can live up to that) to get a second
player suited for Region 2 alone, or even a new one that /has/ the
appropriate capabilities.

(The above is as I understand it. And I'm setting "followup-to: poster"
(hopefully) as it's no longer really an ABP discussion and don't want to
'dump' it to AFP either.)

No, or there would be Words Had with the manufacturers from the likes
of the MPAA.

Google "region free dvd" and you'll find places to sell you region
free players and ways to persuade many normally locked players to
open.

I have used this site a few times.....it tells you how to handset hack most
dvd players to make them region free using a few simple presses on the dvd
remote control. http://www.dvd.reviewer.co.uk/info/multiregion/

Most DVD players sold in the US don't have the change setting, and there
are some seriously stern laws to protect the US film industry anyway.

Everybody else just sells 'all region' players...

You Google the model number of your player, along with other keywords
such as "region". People put up websites with the incantations for
freeing DVDs.

While the (mostly Taiwanese) player manufacturers have to conform to the
letter of the rules, they are not at all unhappy about these "secret"
codes leaking to where naughty people can put them onto the Intenet.

Others have mentioned the difficulty with multi-region DVD players in
the US. Quite a lot of DVD publishers address this by multi-region
DVDs. Most of my operas fall into this category.

Isn't there also an issue with colour encoding, though? In the UK, you
have PAL. In the US, we have NTSC. The multi-region DVDs I mentioned
above are compatible with NTSC. This isn't generally true, is it?

Most of the DVD players available in the UK play both, and SECAM as well.

Protectionist policies in the US may stop this as well.
