And I've mentioned in the past the possibility of at least part
augmentation with a fat-suit. For much the same reason as you say, that
it would be unlikely that anyone would be comfortable trying to be the
'power behind the plain wooden chair at the foot of the throne' of the
serious-thinking (if younger) Vetinari.
/However/, perhaps young Havelock, having finished his education at the
Guild almost entirely unnoticed (at several levels), set out to see the
world and then, a few years later, returned from the Grand Sneer looking
plump and self-serving, sounding a bit dim-witted, perceived to be
impressionable/open to 'guidance' from certain powerful individuals
given the opportunity... Well, if he might /happen/ to find himself in
the company of the right set of people[1], those people might imagine
him to be suitably pliable for their purposes, manoeuvre him into the
palace, and never /quite/ work out that it wasn't really their own
choice to spend a lot more time on their personal estates, before
finding that their 'wonder child' is quite so manipulatable after all.
[1] Which he could not have managed on purpose, of course... Not unless
he were very astute, which he quite obviously isn't. Oh look, he's
blundered into the wrong room again while looking for the dining room,
it's a good job that he couldn't have possibly read the title of the
files sitting on the desk, given he could only have gotten a short
upside-down glance at them before he tripped on the carpet and upset the
inkwell over some pieces of paper... And where's he gone now, I'm sure
he was in the guest room a short while ago. Probably gone to find
something to eat again. Sheesh. I'd swear he somehow manages to get
through locked doors sometimes, although of course there's never any
reason to think he's actually been anywhere /important/, on the way to
the larder in the servants quarters.
