On the list of King's books that precedes the title page, there are a number
of books which have been 'boldfaced' and noted at the bottom as 'Dark Tower
related.'
Many of them, we already knew, such as The Stand, Eyes of the Dragon, Hearts
of Atlantis, Salem's Lot, Insomnia...but, included on the list are also:
Desperation, Rose Madder, Regulators, Buick 8, and It...did I miss obvious
DT references in those books, or is the payoff coming later, and this is
simply foreshadowing? Any ideas? >> Stay informed about: DT V related King books, according to King... |

Well just going off my memory I'll see if I can get all of these right.
Desperation and The Regulators, both have Tak and can tah, and those were
mentioned in Wizard and Glass. Rose Madder, believe it might just be the
other world that the Bull and rose live in are close to the Roland's. From
a Buick 8, has a doorway to another world. It of course has the Turtle
which is one of the guardian of the beams in Roland's world.
Whew! all that and I didn't even pull out my copy of The Stephen King
Universe. Of course I probably got quite a few of them wrong. Anyone want
to give me a hand?

well ypu can also go more than level removed. for instance IT takes place in
derry, which is where insomnia takes place, insomnia being directly related
to the dark tower (more so than it anyway i think). same for rose madder,
where lud i believe is mentioned or alluded to, desperation/regulators can
therefore be attached as they have a common character to rose madder. i
always thought the tak conection, while there, was kind of tenous

Thanks deathboy, you're right, I had forgotten about the city of Lud being
in Rose Madder. What was the common character in Desperation/Regulators and
Rose Madder?

Its funny but I rarely hear mention or tie in of the Turtle who played a big
part in IT... and even the *deadlights*. The Turtle is of course a direct DT
connection... and I would Imagine Pennywise himself... am I reaching too far
here?

well you'e probably right about the turtle, but at the same time, theres
lots of turtles in the world, so if it was just a matter of the turtle i'd
say it could be a reference or it could be coincidence. the turtle plus the
town of derry being linked through insomnia makes it much stronger i think.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ --> >> Stay informed about: DT V related King books, according to King... |

That's right, I remember her now. Thanks Stacey. Good things this isn't

I haven't read the Regulators, and I don't really remember Desperation
very well, but I'm in the middle of Wolves of the Calla right now, and
within the "Low Men" from Hearts of Atlantis are referred to as
"Regulators". Are the Low Men the same characters from Regulators?

That'a a good connection...that hadn't occured to me at all (or I didn't
remember it, anyway)...I knew about Derry and It and Insomnia, and I guess
Bag of Bones (which was also on the list) fits into that 'universe' as
well...<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ --> >> Stay informed about: DT V related King books, according to King... |

I'm re-reading W&G and just noticed that the Big Coffin Hunters are also
referred to as 'regulators'.

An enormous one to be exact with universes swirling in its fingernails (I dont
remember the actually quote as Bill is *flung* towards the deadlights)... See
the Turtle of enormous girth....
I think Derry is actually the Portal of the Turtle... but I guess we'll see.

-Rose Madder. The servant of Rose Madder in the "alternate universe"
talks about Lud and having seen the bodies on the poles.
-It is directly related to Insomnia (The destruction at the end of It
is discussed at the beginning of the book). Also, I believe someone
in Insomnia sees a clown in a sewer grate.
-Desperation and Regulators are linked. I believe the "language of
the unformed" that Tak speaks is repeated in Black House.
-Haven't read Buick 8, so no way to tell you.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ --> >> Stay informed about: DT V related King books, according to King... |

I just finished re-reading _The Gunslinger_ (the revised edition,
this time) and if you read the description of where Marten sort of
flings/drags Roland out into the universe, it is *very* reminiscent
of the scene in _IT_ where Bill and Pennywise are doing the rite of
chud. There's a bit about curved walls and what might be outside
them. Very evocative of _IT_, anyway. I've often wondered about
Pennywise, myself. Although, I think he's a bit like Tak rather than
a major part of the story (unless the Tak-like creatures become
important later, which is possible). Interesting idea in your next
message, too, about Derry being the Portal of the Turtle. Don't know
how that'd fit in anywhere, but it's fun to think about. *grin*
Speaking of the revised edition, I can't figure out what all the fuss
is about! I only found one thing that wasn't made more clear by the
changes. I can't remember exactly what it was, at the moment, but it
seemed like just something that should have been taken out or amended
and wasn't. I think Jake was responding to something Roland said in
the original version, but Roland's comment had been taken out.
Anyway, I did notice most of the changes (after all, I do a re-read
once a year or so - or, at least read the bits I like and skim the
bits I remember, but which weren't all that interesting), but I only
saw the one problem where I sort of went, 'Huh? Did I miss a
paragraph?'
