My best-beloved the space buff mentioned that too; Apollo 8, commanded
by Jim Lovell. They could disappear from radio contact behind the moon
on schedule, not come out, and Houston would be sure they cut the
orbit slightly wrong or something and crashed.
Weakness in my own clever scheme: while NASA and their grieving
families would accept the disappearance of Apollo 8 without question,
Anu might well smell a rat. Dahak shooting them down on automatic
would be a real possibility, probably the highest percentage
possibility. But he might also work out the real situation, i.e. Dahak
is alive and well and has shanghaied human help. We have Hector's
assessment that the known existence of a fully functional Dahak would
send Anu completely insane and nuking the Earth just to see it burn,
unless he was marginally saner 70 years earlier than Colin's time.
Which I doubt, with a 50,000 year run-up to it.
