Hello,

Here I am again with a question on "Heirs of Empire" (3d novel of the Dahak
series, Baen Books' paperback, 1996). Smile

This time it's a very general question, but I hope I can find a solution
herer since lots oy you people seem to know Weber's books VERY well.

Ok, basically I would like to know what happens EXACTLY (I only get a
general picure, which is not enough to translate) in chapter 19 of this
novel (pages 212 to 222).

Sean, Tam, Harriet and Sandy are in a cutter headed to the Valley of the
Damned. Once there, they get some signals on passive. Lots of signals, and
one of them seems to be bigger than the others. Tam suggests it could be an
orbital power feed. Harrie says he's right about saying it's a
"transmission" (where's the link between both things?). Then she talks about
a "passive solar job". Later in this chapter, the crew tries to go down a
slope to reach the valley where all this gear is, but on their way, the
system shoots on them. Finally, Sandy (who had stayed on top of the
mountain) destroys the shooting source and everybody is saved. Next
chapter, Harrie says to Tamman he was right to say all this thing was a
"power receptor".

Ok, I get the general picture: there was stuff in the valley that opened
fire on them. Smile)

But what exactly is this stuff? What does it look like? What is/was it
supposed to do? What are the smaller sources and the big source? What's the
relationship between the whole thing and the quarantine system? What's the
relationship between it and the guys in the Temple? If it is a station
receiving solar power collected by an orbital platform, what was this power
supposed to be used for?

Thank you so much!

Lucas

So Spanish can become a mish-mash as well? So many new concepts to name.

Spanish is already mish-mash.

I used to work at a company in So. Cal that had some immigrants from
Mexico doing some of the production work and we had one lady from Spain
working in the office, the production workers ask us not to have her
write memos in Spanish as they were too confusing and did not make sense
in Mexico's version of Spanish.

Yeah, Spanish is a fun language. Apparantly people in Venezuela scratch
their heads when folks from Texas talk about eating a Burrito. "Why
would you want to eat a little donkey? Pigs taste better!" Also, a
Tortilla in Spain is apparantly a kind of omelette. And then there's
the whole Vosotros verb form that nobody outside of Spain ever seems to
acknowledge the existence of.

Also, speaking of European languages mashing with their American
counterparts, I had a teacher in high school who used to be a US Army
linguist, and part of her job was being fluent in three languages. Her
first job in the Army apparently was translating British intelligence
reports into a form of English easily understood by American soldiers.

It is not just Spanish, my wife's native language is Melayu (Malay). We
were watching some wildlife show about the gila monster and she was
ROFL. She wondered who would name any animal as gila (gila is Malay for
insane)!

Because Colin spoke English.

Hmmm, what does Dahak use for communication to the carbon based crew
members?

Y'all are missing the most obvious "advantage" of English:

It's the only language in the world that's equally inconvenient for
everyone, including native speakers.
