Well, I hope there are still some readers here, but after cleaning out all
the porn spam I'm not sure.
I must have read/heard 5-6 references to "The Dead" in the last month, and
so I took that as my cue that I really ought to get around to reading it.
I picked up a copy of _Dubliners_ the other day and I was wondering, there's
two ways of asking this:
1) Is there any advantage to reading all the stories before reading the
last.
2) Is there any harm in reading the last first, or second?
I intend to read them all. I already read "The Sisters" and really enjoyed
it, but I'm a bit impatient. Should I read them in order?
TIA,

No, there's certainly nothing "wrong" with reading the stories out of their
published order. I'll warn you, though, that after "The Dead," the other
stories will pale somewhat. While some of them (such as "Clay" and "Ivy Day
in the Committee Room") are great pieces of writing, "The Dead" is a work of
the highest order of genius.
If you're interested in learning something of the arc of Joyce's career,
read them in order. If you're primarily interested in great writing and
great reading, go for the gusto.

What? Do I have lame critic stamped on my forehead?

Ahh, yes! That's it.

I was *hoping* someone would tell me what I wanted to hear. I'm not one who
needs telling twice. Thanks. I get right on it.

Well, "lame" is a pretty unpleasant way of putting it. There are those of us
who look into such things as a matter of intellectual curiosity. Of course,
not everyone inherited that gene.

I have been carrying a paperback copy I picked up in a used bookshop in my
backpack for sometime. I work in a factory and sometimes on my breaks I will
take it out and read a bit. It helps sometimes to kindle my mind and spirit.
Last week, when reading "A Painfull Case" , a part of one line seemed to
really stand out : " .....every bond, he said, is a bond to sorrow." He has
captured the inescapable truth in a scant few words. The description of Mr.
Duffy and his room at the beginning of the story is also superb. I could
almost smell the fragrance that escapes on lifting the lid of the desk.
I 'm sure you'll find many pleasures in the stories in any order you choose.

There is a saying in Ireland....you can choose your friends...but you
can't choose your relations!
My name is also Grimes but I have to agree with David in that Joyce
intended the stories in Dubliners to be read sequentially....in fact,
he fought well- documented battles with his publisher to establish the
order.
May I point you to a Joyce reading group on Yahoo that have just
concluded a read through of Dubliners with some brilliant essays...
eeerrr...lost the link....but J-Joyce Ulysses should get you there.

Don't be shy.
Jump in where you feel comfortable.
Hell, let your cat open the book for you and read on.

I would agree to some extent that the best way to read Dubliners is in
the order they are presented.
However, let's bear in mind that The Dead was not one of the original
stories when Joyce was first trying to publish the book, it was added
later.
Also, I would say it is the story that most stands up on its own.
Personally I would say read it through in order, at least the first
time, but let's not be too pedantic about it.
