Today is the 9th of December. and as the golf ball of Time rolls down
the rabbit hole of Destiny and the half-eaten Mars Bar of Fate melts in
the forgotten pocket of my new cricket whites... it's Diem, Guardian of
Gargoyles and Woodlice's birthday. Happy birthday!

have a carefully-gnawed wooden... well, we're not really quite sure what
it is but it's a pleasant thing to hold.

If it is a wooden shape that fits neatly into one's hand and is pleasant to
hold and fiddle with, then in *our* family it is called a Queeg.

There is a reason for the name, but I'll leave it to see if anyone else
might guess why we called them that.

Many happy returns, Diem, and I hope all your charges are behaving
themselves today at least.

One feels the answer might be barbed. Unlike these birthday wishes.

Not anything to do with the lad who handles the mechanical gubbins, and who
is forever running for the head?

well we're assuming about these great big 'hand' things that human-type
people seem to have but it seems like a safe bet. it fits neatly under a
heap of more than fourteen woodlice.

Sounds like a Queeg to me.

Am I going to want to know where you got the wood from?

Thank you all.
I made my birthday cake this afternoon - chocolate cake with chocolate
in and chocolate on top and marzipan balls covered in chocolate to
decorate - and as I've got flu I'm going to spend the evening with the
cake and something suitably alcoholic to fend off the dratted virus.
