Lost era - Deny thy father, by Jeff Mariotte. Pocket Books 2003.

This is the fifth of six books which ³fill in² the years between Kirkıs
supposed death and Next Generation times.
The book is about William Riker and his father, Kyle. As such, it is of
interest to Trek fans. It is well written, and easy to get through. If
that sounds like faint praise, it is.
The Next Generation series established that relations between these two
were strained, as were those between Tom Paris and his father, BıElanna
Torres and her father,... In other words, anyone who was in Starfleet has
strained relations with their children, because they Werenıt Around.
Basically the book has two streams, William Riker going through Starfleet
Academy, and Kyle Riker trying to find out who is trying to kill him. They
never meet.
William at Starfleet Academy is bland, and a story barely worth telling,
but relevant to those who immerse themselves in the series. Kyle trying to
find out who is trying to kill him is interesting, and covers about as
many pages as an average short story. To pad this out, he flees, meets
other people in a story with no resolution, and returns. In life we
continually have stories which go nowhere, but that is why we read novels!
I wanted more from this thread.
As with the other books in the series, we occasionally meet characters
whom we will come to know better in the various tlevision series.
