....in here! Currently reading - "Heart Shaped Box" by Joe Hill. Really
well-paced story, and a very good first novel from this up-and-coming
author. From the blurb:
"Buy my stepfather's ghost," said the email. So Jude did.
When Judas Coyne heard someone was selling a ghost on the internet, he
knew it was perfect for his collection of the macabre: the cannibal's
cookbook, the witch's confession, the authentic snuff movie. For an
ageing death-metal-rock-God, buying a poltergeist almost qualifies as a
business expense. Besides, Jude thought he knew all about ghosts. He's
been haunted for years by the spirits of bandmates dead and gone, the
spectre of the abusive father he fled as a child, and the memory of the
suicidal girl he abandoned.
But this ghost is different. Delivered to his doorstep in a black
heart-shaped box, the latest addition to Jude's collection makes the house
feel cold. It makes the dogs bark. And it means to chase Jude from his
home and make him run for his life...
This is an excellent "road movie" type of novel, and Hill has proved to be
very much his father's son, even in his first book. In case you didn't
know, in what must be the worst-kept secret in publishing, (it was leaked
about five minutes after the book's release) Hill's father is Steven King.
Cheers,
Pete. >> Stay informed about: Gosh, innit quiet.. |

Hi Pete. Very quiet in here. I check every day and no one is around.
This Hill's book certainly sounds like some of his father's strangeness.
Like father like son?
Received and began reading Dean's latest Frankenstein, Lost Souls, today. I
had wondered how he was going to continue this story. Will soon find out
but so far seems a bit fantastical that all of the characters have migrated
to California and Montana from New Orleans. At any rate, I do still enjoy
Dean's way with words.

I know! It's uncanny. Mike's gone to ground, for no good reason I can
ascertain; hope it's not bad news. Scott's (hopefully) in the middle of
moving back into his condo, Linda's online-ish, but just not contributing
to group discussion any more, and everyone else seems to have fallen by
the wayside. I think it may have a lot to do with the advent of
alternative comms media: facebook, twitter, etc,. Text-only Usenet may
well be becoming a thing of the past; after all, who contributes to
bulletin-boards any more?

Oh, most definitely. He also has his father's (annoying, IMHO) propensity
for dragging a story out far beyond its natural stopping point, but this
remains a minor failing compared to the otherwise excellent writing.
Looking forward to many other good things to come from "Joe Hill!" LOL!!!

This is the only usenet group I still subscribe to, and it seems to me
that usenet already seems to be a relic of the early net IMHO.

I'm trying to get caught up with some things around the house

I got an email from him, and replied right after he said the condo
was ready. I haven't heard from him, since.

Do you have an active bulletin board that isn't long distance? I
occasionally access one that is an archive of US Veteran news stories,
but it is available on line, through a portal.
Has anyone heard from Fred lately?

Anyone wanting to run for any political office in the US should have to
have a DD214, and a honorable discharge. >> Stay informed about: Gosh, innit quiet.. |

Unfortunately I can't read anything right now. My eyes are getting worse
and exacerbating the problem is the A/C making them even more dry. When I
finally get a system, I'm getting the free PC Kindle app and trying it with
the 6 bucks 'Watcher's'. I'll watch on my 58" and hope that works. If it
does, I'll use that, if not I'll need to wait until I can afford a tablet (A
LONG way off).

There is a reason for that. Linda is having troubles with her system. She
says once it's up, she'll be back

I agree, blogs seem to be the 'new-way'. At the same point I'm turned off
more and more with blogs. Since most of the time you can post anon, trolls
are heavy. Even those who normally would be a troll feel free to let loose.
basically: "My idea is superior to yours!", "You like that show? You need to
shut off your TV and just go listen to the radio.", "If you don't like that
political idea/politician, you are un America and need to shut up!", etc.
Too much venom these days in blogs. news, and pretty much all other
spectrums. MHO, anyway

I know that latest PC systems are more than capable of dealing with
Gigabytes of data at ridiculous speeds, but there's just something about a
text-only system dealing with text, only, which still strikes me as
*elegant* somehow. When all you want to do is write, why use a system
with extra knobs and whistles that you would prefer not to use?
"Bloatware," I think they call it. Anyhoo, I think you're right - like
me, it's becoming a thing of the past.
Cheers,
Pete. >> Stay informed about: Gosh, innit quiet.. |

that it still exists. Local .bbs groups though, no.
