I suspect there are a lot of readers who, like me, have never seen a
hedgehog and wondered.

Sorry, TTBOMK we don't have hedgehogs here. However, we do have
squirrels, racoons, skunks, coyotes, bears, cougars, (and a bit
further out of the cities) lynx, bobcats, marmots, beavers, ground
squirrels and prarie dogs to make up for the lack of hedgehogs : )

Well, I'd never even heard of them until I saw the first reference to
the one what can't be buggered in Pterry's book.
It's possible they are somewhere in North America outside of a zoo,
but I have no idea where they might be. Go ahead and Google for them
if she's going to worry about it! <G>

In zoos. I don't think they are available in the wild at all, even as
cute garden pests imported from the UK.

She can put beer out for the slugs. The raccoons, rabbits, squirrels and
opossums will help themselves to whatever they like.

Perhaps it might be best if you don't put out bread and milk for any
hedgehogs that you might encounter. From what I can recall (from
Animal Hospital), many hedgehogs can't tolerate milk and are as sick
as .... well, hedgehogs. Apparently the received wisdom is to leave
out a little dog or cat food and just plain water.

But that might not be a problem if there aren't any of the little
buggers in Canadadaa.

Don't forget porcupines. Note: you really don't want to attract
porcupines to the property. They tend to chew wood and damage houses
that way, and instead of little prickles they have long sharp spines
about a foot long, with hooks on the end so they don't come out once
they're stuck you.

However, the tales of them shooting the spines out to get you from a
distance are officially denied.

Sorry to disappoint you and upset your wife, but no, we don't have hedgehogs
in North America. What we do have are raccoons, which are unbelievably cute
but highly destructive, and skunks, which are just as cute so long as you
don't cause them any kind of distress at all. You can put out bread and milk
for raccoons if you want to, though your neighbours will hate you if you do
and the milk will freeze at this time of year in most of Canada. Skunks
prefer slugs.

And none in SE Asia either TTBOMK, certainly none in Sri Lanka. We do have
porcupines (who cant be b****red)

I spent a good 1/2 hour at the Echidna enclosure at Melbourne Zoo waiting
for it to come out, however I did get to see the platypus, I had expected it
to be bigger.

By whom? The porcupines? Well they would, wouldn't they... they want to
maintain the element of surprise!
