Think yourself lucky. I've been there about 30 times in the last few years,
and went to the platypus enclosure about half the time. Never saw it. So
then when my mum comes down to visit, I say "no point going in there, it's
always hiding somewhere" and so we go in, and the bugger swims in circles
for about 20 minutes while we watch it. Pah! (and the echidnas we saw that
day too, but I've seen more in the wild around Victoria than in the zoo).

Not outside of zoos, and not in Canada either (except for a very few
imported African ones kept as pets, so I've read).

No offense, but that's a singularly stupid idea, especially if you're
someplace rural. Giving wild animals the idea that people are good
sources of food has gotten many people and more animals in danger,
sometimes of the life-threatening sort. You may only be planning to
feed something cute and harmless, but that doesn't mean *only* cute
and harmless creatures will start hanging around your property.

Bear in mind that we have a lot more wildlife than you're used to, and
much of it comes with claws and teeth.

Funny, I always thought that line was
"On a moonlit night you've got your dead toad-frog".

The noise they make. As a previous poster said, they can make an
extraordinary amount of noise for their size, and is generally quite
similar to the sort of snuffling noise a pig makes while feeding (not
the full-voiced "oink"), And they either live in, or are often found in,
hedges.

Some time back, somebody marketed hedgehog flavour crisps (chips to
Americans).

definitely Dave Barry.

Oh, yes. With the marketing tagline, "Not a middle of the road crisp".

(Though I don't know what they were *really* flavoured with).

OMSG! and *gaaaag*! When I lived in Scotland, I suspected that Brits
would eat _anything_ that could be deep-fat-fried - this confirms it.

Lots of E numbers to simulate Hedgehogs, I'd guess. Under the Trades
Descriptions Act (or something like that) in the UK if it says 'hedgehog
flavour' then it *must* actually taste of hedgehogs.

In the same way, 'rabbit flavour' cat food must taste of rabbit, and be
fit for human consumption - since the cats generally can't tell you what
it tastes like, some poor bugger out there's got a lovely job![1]

Not MINE! They get (canned) wee bits of steak, turkey, chicken,
shrimp/tuna ekcetra in "gravy". Otherwise, I get *looked* at.

Agreed, on both counts; if we weren't townies, I'd not let her do it (at
my grandparent's house in the Lake District - which was *very* rural)
we'd not have dreamed of feeding the wildlife. In fact we were more
concerned with getting rid of it! The moles, I'm sure, would have loved
any food put out for hedgehogs, and the rabbits were just a PITA.

Absolutely right. Quite correct. As I said above, we're both townies
(she's completely city-bred, I at least used to hang out in the country
during the holidays in my yoof), so unless we knew for certain that
there were the expected small critters eating the food you put out, then
we'd not put it out (probably under duress on her count, but I *would*
insist... honest).
