Going OT again (sorry) but there's parasites that are proved (FSVO...) to
affect the metal processes of their hosts, effectively making them (for
example) bolder and less timid, such that they tend to get eaten by their
predators and the parasite gets a good chance of developing into its next
stage (which happens in the predator).
There are unlikely other situations where that kind of thing happens. Not
intelligent design, but rather the fact that any parasite that /happens/
(by chance) to excrete chemicals in a form that affect the host in a
serendipitous way will get the advantage it needs, and from then on, the
greater the effect the better.

I'm Merkin and the only place I've seen hedgehogs is as pets. You can get
them at a few specialty pet stores around Michigan at least -- don't know
about other places in the country.

It's true, though. I've seen one - come to think of it I think it was in
southern Michigan when I was there once - and that's how I know they have
very soft noses and very sharp prickles.

Yep, here their natural habitat is on a bunch of wood shavings in a glass
enclosed tank.
I've seen some on the tv show "Emergency Vets" too, when people bring in
their pet hedgehogs. Seeing one in the wild would completely befuddle me.

They're African hedgehogs, slightly different from the British kind. They're
available in Canada, too, but I don't think they're all that popular.

There's an island in Scotland that's overrun with the things (they were brought
in to eat something and when that had been finished they started on seabird
eggs) & they are advertising for people to go there to kill them. What's the
shipping cost of a crate of hedgehogs to the States?

No, it's a computer file. But you mentioning the mattress keyed me on
beds, which reminded me of Sarah Hotdesking, which reminded me I made

Ack! Noooo! We're having problem enough with the blasted Japaneese beetles
the farmers imported to eat the pests on their crops. They look like lady
bugs, but more of an orange hue, and they bite! Not to mention they don't
die off for the winter -- they burrow into the houses and hibernate. Ugh.
