Anyone excited to read the sequel to Hell's Gate that's supposed to be
coming
out in March? Been reading the preview chapters over at the "jiltanith"
site?

Got bored reading about the details of Cobalt-60 and was curious if anyone
was looking forward to Hell Hath No Fury.

I am. I think Linda Evans did most of the writing as there are just too
many problems in the book.

The gates? All on land when 2/3 of the planet surface is water?
Different air pressure from altitude differences? (I have no problem
with pressure from weather differences.)

A rifle is "complex", but they have machine looms?

"Machine sewn leather goods"? Do they machine stitch clothing?

Combine the "litter" and the propulsion for the boat, and you get - what?

Several other problems. Good reading, but it's just not up to something
with Hizzelf's name on the cover.

Maybe that Arcanan "machine looms" are magic looms. Wink

LOL.

I would not mind putting a boat drive on one of the litters. An insane
blast, considering the lack of directional control.

A lot of air moving one way.

My bad. Apparently they can be in mid air. That still leaves the ocean,
and "equalization" between worlds.

I don't understand your post.

Air pressure would attempt to equalize all along the chain, and that
would cause serious problems on some planets.

Yup. Page 110, third paragraph.

Which means a lot of air moving one way, off planet.

She said it. It does not compute.

Off some planet, yeah. Maybe down to something like the Tibetan Plateau.

Yes, it's pretty marginal that they have something like that.

The Mythalans would never develop something like an assisted loom or
spinning wheel. Ransarans would. So... Maybe.

But, rifles are complex?

Clothing can be very expensive, without mass production. There would be
a big demand for the product of machine looms, especially in the colder
countries and among (relatively) wealthy workers.

No context, just leaping in here.

A rifle itself may not necessarily be complex, but the PRODUCTION of a
rifle would be considerably more complex than for a smoothbore weapon.
You have to devise a method of putting rifling inside the barrel, which
would add considerably to the complexity of building the weapon (now, if
you want a breech-loading weapon, then it gets even trickier to build,
though, despite the extra complexity, easier to use)

That's what the character was looking at, but he had no way of knowing
the steps needed to create the device, so I'm taking it as the device alone.

The series began 39 years after a volcanic eruption that would have
killed a lot of people. Maybe 1850?

The barrel is formed around a rod by forging. The guides were first made in
wood with a small metal cutter and while rather laborous not all that hard
to do. It still isn't complex compared to a power loom.

Maybe if you throw in a wheel lock for ignition?

they call for some pretty precise machining etc which would make them
a complex object to make.

They were forged in the earliest days. I think they were being drilled
by the time breach loaders came out.

One of the Foxfire books - sorry, can't remember which one - takes you
through the process of building a rifling bench. The bench is built
with hand tools. I'll try to describe what I recollect from reading the
tome years ago. As I vaguely remember, the barrel is fixed in place.
The rifling apparatus is mounted upon a sliding cradle lying between
guides atop the bench. The rifling cutter is tightly mounted in a slot
at the end of a long rod. A gear is fixed to the other end of the rod.
Guides hold the rod in place but allow it to rotate but not move
longitudinally. A toothed rack device is driven across the cradle by a
under-lug running in a slanting dado in the bench itself as the cradle
is slowly advanced, feeding the rotating rod and cutter into the
barrel, teh rod making one turn in about 40 to 48 inches. Barrels back
then were hammered into an octagonal cross section, giving either 4 or
8 flats to locate the barrel to cut the 4 or 8 rifling grooves. It was
a slow process, each groove requiring several passes of the cutter.
ISTR shims were inserted between the cutter and the bottom of the
retaining slot to advance the cutter to cut deeper each pass. There you
have it. Now go make your own Kentucky rifle. Do a good job and you'll
have an accurate firearm.
