Archived from groups: rec>arts>books>tolkien (more info?)

I am up to chapter 6 in the Hobbit, and it has just got a bit more
interesting with the introduction of Gollum and the finding of the
magic ring...

I spoke to my brother-in-law, and he said that he didn't read the
Hobbit before the LOTR, and he wishes that he had have done...

also, the Silmarillion says on the back that it is a precursor to
LOTR,
but I have been advised to read it after LOTR...

It seems "Damian John Paul Brown" wrote in rec.arts.books.tolkien:

I don't see an actual question in there, but for what it's worth I
agree with the advice you were given.

Read /Hobbit/ first, then LotR. Then read Silm, but perhaps you
might want to precede it with the parts of /Unfinished Tales/ that
have to do with the Third and Fourth Ages.
