Borders wouldn't let me pre-order in person at the store. Today I phoned
and they said on the phone that it had arrived and they had 20 copies -
but when I got there, they had none. The man who checked the stockroom
said that the computer said "20" and "0" in different places, and also
that the computer record said it had been sent from their supplier on
the 13th and arrived on the 15th. He gave me a $5 coupon (to make up
for the gas expended because they gave me bad information on the phone),
and a helpful hint:

When you call, ask them "Do you have a copy in your hand right now?
Or are you just looking at the computer screen?" If they don't have
a copy in their hand, then don't believe they have it.

hrm.. annoying.. i've got to be down that way tomorrow anyway so am going to
check.. but it is very annoying.. my step daughters are coming for
thanksgiving and we'd like to watch it with them.. they'll have to leave
before it's on TV so this silly "we're only releasing it here" thing is just
annoying.. esp up here in alaska.. i think the next nearest one would be
over 200-300 miles away in Fairbanks.. maybe.....

*sigh*

Further helpful hint: Borders will hold a book for a customer behind the
counter for three days if you ask.

That helps once they actually have it in stock... and tonight (Wednesday)
the man on the phone said that he did in fact have it in his hand, and
put it on reserve for me to pick up. More news as it happens.
At least the online listing says it's reasonably priced.

That's 13 as in 21, as it turned out.

Got it! US$19.99 and I had a pre-Thanksgiving coupon for 25% off.
It was in Family Films (as opposed to SF/Fantasy, Comedy, Foreign, or TV),
and it was also in the Impulse Buy location at the checkout.

The cover picture is different - just Susan and the kids in a posed
scene not in the story, and the picture is embossed. However, Borders
stuck their "Borders Exclusive" sticker and the price sticker over
the hilt of the sword.

WARNING: It's the barebones edition - no deleted scenes, only the
American trailer. OTOH There's a good long interview with Terry,
which I'm not entirely sure was on the UK edition.

I have no idea whether the eventual March 2008 release will have
the rest of the extras that were on the UK edition, such as the
"making of Hogfather" or the UK tv promotions.

"Ingenuity can do the work of money - if you are ingenious."

P.S. The Borders Exclusive edition does _not_
have the option of subtitles!

If the "regular" edition in March 2008 doesn't
have them, I'll be Very Annoyed. I do have the
UK edition, which _does_ have that option, and
because of that, a friend with partial hearing
was able to enjoy the movie.

Sheesh.. this is making me rethink the whole thing... however...
we were in the store on the 21st in Anchorage as we had to go in anyway to
the airport....
they did not have it.. they looked up my order and it had not yet even been
shipped.. so... still waiting...
as it turns out, my step daughters are supposed to be leaving Monday
sometime to go back to their mom's.. we had hoped to watch it with them.. so
far. looks like no luck.. not even sure we're going to get it on ION.. I
checked the supposed local listings.. and it shows a hockey game, but no
where is Hogfather listed... this is not not NOT happy making.....

we'll likely wind up getting this light version if and when it ever actually
shows up, just cuz we're that desperate and anxious.. and then hope for a
better one later and grab that as well.. (would help the numbers anyway and
encourage more of this sort of thing over here....)
though we may not be entirely happy about it.....
meanwhile.. i am sincerely hoping that hogfater will be part of the "paid
programing" listed after the stupid canadian hockey game Sunday night.....

I got my copy of Hogfather at the Memphis, TN Border's store on Fri. They
had several copies. The clerk did have to look it up and found it in
action/adventure instead of fantasy. It was 16.95.

For those of you watching in Connecticut, Ion is on channel 23 of
Cablevision of Southern Connecticut.

Before 6.00pm, channel 23 is used by some shopping network, so it's
easy to miss. I didn't realise that we received Ion until a couple of
minutes ago.

Magic!
