Are bicycles a (good weather) option? I biked at least that far for my
freshman year in high school (14 or 15 years old, in the USA). There was a
convenient and car-free bike path that could take me a good deal of the
way, which made the route much safer than going the whole way on roads.

Not up the EXTREMELY steep hills with very heavy traffic they would
have to follow. There is a 'bike path' marked but it's just the
half-metre of road closest to the sidewalk on the otherwise busy
roads. Not entirely safe for children to be riding on.

The hills are steep enough that a car, coasting down the hill under no
power, goes faster than the speed limit of 80 kph (50 mph). Himself
has tested it in our car. This is NOT a hill I want my 11 and 13 year
old kids to be riding down on bicycles!

Steep hills will do it. Or fast traffic. Ok for college kids (maybe not
according to the parents of said kids, but the kids are too old to listen),
but not medium-size kids. There was, in fact, a steep hill on my high
school ride, but only one. Broken into steep-flat-steep-flat, so not too
bad, and not too high. And almost no traffic on it.

Oh, well. It was worth asking. :>
