The INS put a freeze on all adoptions from Cambodia merely weeks before
the Weber's adoption papers would finally clear* - the freeze lasted
over a year. All adoption papers that they were processing were frozen;
with one exception. Jolie's was given a exception and was processed.

*And what really got DW hot under the collar to begin with was that the
INS had messed up the processing and had already cost the Webers months
of their time.

Is that her fault though? Is there proof that she specifically asked to be
given special treatment?

I gather that this story was told some time ago on a private news
server, (which my ISP won't connect to) and maybe on Baen's Bar. Does
anyone have an archives of that discussion they could post? I'm quite
interested.

I just watched it, she looks alot like my mental image of HH. That movie
also looks very weird.

W'hoppen was that AJ and her then-husband got a visa for their
questionably-adopted kid with no problem whatsofrigging, while DW and a
whole lot of other extraordinary people were having to fight the INS to
get their kids home. The fact that this excuse for a celebrity was able
to circumvent all the hoops he was being made to jump through is what
got DW mad. If it turns out, as it looks, that AJ's adoption agency was
teh one which caused the problems for all the legitimate adoptions ...
he's just going to get madder.

She will never play a role on any Honor Harrington movie. Unless as a
stunt-double for a female Scrag ... in a live-fire exercise.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

I'm sure AJ isn't losing any sleep over it...

I can also imagine that everybody trying to adopt asked for special
treatment. What happened is the way the system works rather than the way its
supposed to work. The INS is to blame for not doing its job.

Jolie waltzed in _after_ the moratorium started and immediately received
a baby. While the Department of State and INS were being as
obstructionist as they could to everyone else, including breaking their
own rules to halt adoptions in progress, the broke several more rules
helping her.

This whole thing is a sad story, with a lot of pain and frustration for
everyone involved.

I was of course totally unaware of it when I posted my original "sighting."

I noticed later through a Google Groups search that I was not the first to
notice the resemblance.

I can't help but wonder if anyone involved in the film's production was also
struck by the resemblance; there have to be other sf fans working on a movie
like this.

Correct. It wouldn't be the first time the INS has made a complete mess of
things.

Sorry, Alex, that was two bar-crashes ago and the Bar never kept
archives beyond a few weeks in any case.

If this is the case, MWW should be mad (more likely, madder) at the
government bureaucrats than at Jolie. All she did was try to adopt -
the same thing Weber did. That the bureaucrats broke the rules for her
and not him is not her fault.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

I'm not sure if the information is still available online or not, but MWW had
posted various missives he received from the INS on Baen's bar. Needless to say
the INS was not very polite in them. Also unlike Ms Jolie, MWW and the other
people that were caught up in this problem were not adopting from the American
agencies that were the problem. They were adopting from Cambodian angencies
which were being very careful that the children they were putting up for
adoption were in fact orphans. His anger stems from the fact that she was the
most famous face on a scandal that cost him, his wife, and a couple of hundred
other adoptive families over a year of their adoptive childrens lives. The
only reason they and the others were able to eventually adopt was that the
president got involved and basicly told the INS to get their heads out of their
@$$es. Those that finally were able to adopt after the scandal are probably the
only ones that can be sure their children were not bought and sold like
cattle.I don't know that he blames Ms Jolie personally. But because she was
able to adopt without the hoops he and the other families were put through he
has said she would not be welcome in a movie made from any of his books.
