If I was a author, I have to say I'd be tempted to lurk in the places
where people talk about me and my work.......but then again I suppose
the old adage about hearing nothing good if you listen in on a
conversation about you may also prove true.

Either way, being almost certainly usenet literate, I would imagine
that he's looked in from time to time.

Has anyone ever claiming to be him ever posted? I imagine he'd post
under a pseudonym though.

Can't wait for The Algebraist; I only wish it was a Culture novel.
(that's a request, Iain...)

Favourite story? Toss up between The State of the Art and Excession.

I wonder why I find the Culture so beguiling....it's not just the
Utopian factor, it's more. It's just, well it would be, such a fun
place to live. And I see nothing wrong with hedonism.

(Sorry, turned into a bit if a ramble, but there are really only two
threads here......)

I do know that terry pratchett used to go to an NG dedicated to him (yes I
know people who read terry pratchett). but left, similarly Ian Anderson
used to post on Alt.Music.jethro-tull

I heard mr. Pratchett left due to people writing fan fiction and he was
being accused of plagiarism. The whole band used to post on Jethro Tull,
but at the time it had a very very bad case of trolls who just kept
changing their names, using anonymous posting sites and quoting 'mien
kampf' to anything anyone posted (they kept it up for well over a year).

I do not doubt mr. Banks looks in of occasion, but the traffic lately has
been almost non-existant, no doubt it will pick up when the next book is
released and we can all discuss it and tell him he should write another
culture novel.

Pterry's still a semi-regular over at rec.arts.sf.written. As are SM
Stirling, WJ Williams, and other SF noteworthies....

I asked him this very question a couple of years back. Surprisingly,
to me anyway, he said he was not online himself. He thought it would
be too much of a distraction, although his parents were online and he
used their connection on occasion. He did say that when he did go
online, this'd be one of the first places he'd go. So, I suppose it's
possible that he's lurked in the meantime.

Nobody has to my knowledge. In any case, it would be easy for him to
authenticate himself to the group if he wanted to post openly. A
confirmation from any number of his well-established online friends
would do the job.
