[snip a really funny post]

You know what's really sad about all this? I'm starting to feel a
very strong sense of Deja Vu.

It is beginnig to feel like the late 60's/early 70's again.

The clothes are sure the same, the war rages and it is not popular,
mothers are worried about their sons going over and while there is no
actual draft, pleny of folks who do not want to be in the military
anymore are still in and others are planning on getting out asap when
they would have stayed in otherwise.

My mother's neighbor - widow of the local legendary football coach,
former head of the cheerleaders at the local high school (in other
words, local deity) l, mother of two boys only a couple of years too
young to have seen Viet Nam and grandmother of an honorably discharged
marine who served with distinction in Iraq with the 1st Marine
Division at the beginning of the war in Iraq - , is worred that said
grandson will be called back against his will and she vehemently
opposes this war and how it is being handled. She's willing to tell
said graindson to go to Canada or wherever to avoid going back against
his will. And it would be against his will.

Soldiers who have served, been honorably discharged and thought
they had done their duty are being forced back into the military.
This, at least, has been held by the courts to be involuntary
servitude or has so far anyway, with THIS court...

I'm seeing what looks suspicously to me like recruiter abuses and lies
of the sort we had back then (ok, always have but my hubby hates
when I say that).

We have a conservative religious movement that is at least a tiny
bit smarter than they were back then (they finally figured out that
the backlash against a pregnant unmarried girl and her child was
the main driving force behind all those illegal abortions that
happened constantly and in evey small town in the country).
They are still trying to impose their "morality" on folks with
completely different belief systems and don't understand why
that's not different than a Taliban type insisting that women
cover themselves completely and only husbands/fathers
touch women. After all, while that is a far stricter form of
morality than our folks express, it's not THEIR morality and
is therefore WRONG. <sigh>

We have a Supreme Court Justice making comments that sound
frighteningly like a suggestion that the Constitution does not
mean seperation of Church and State. And the statement
didn't mean ALL religions, just Christian ones, which immediately
got spun to include Judeo/Christian which I find hysterical...

We have a government that is wildly unpopular though it doesn't
get it. The people as as divided as they were back then, maybe
more.

We have Bob Jones writing a congratulatory letter to Bush telling
him to go ahead and push his religious agenda because us liberals
hate him because we hate his Christ and he has a mandate to
get a reprieve from paganism. <shudder>

Living through this once in my life was enough. I don't want to do
this again. <sigh> This time is worse. Lot's worse. It is starting
to feel like Joe McCarthy has come back and is running things
somehow.

Now, for a lighter note, an old friend of mine who taught survival
courses to civilians used to tell a story about one advanced course
he was teaching where they did a 5 day, 100 mile walk-out and
had only what they could carry on their back.

Seems that one of the folks had hit a store for "serious backpackers"
and brought along a neat little portable cappucino maker. It got
ditched the second day out...

(major snippage of some funy, funny stuff)

Now I remember why I still wade through all the garbage here. I was
beginning to wonder...
