I've been away from the group for a while (and I'm sorry, because I
missed so many interesting discussions), and the older threads seem to
be locked. Brust came up again, and he's constantly compared to Zelazny
whenever I ask for recommendations for similar authors, but I've never
saw many parallels.
To be fair, I've read a few of his books, Jhereg and whatever comes
after that, and it's unfair to judge an author before his style has
matured. But the similarities just seemed superficial to me. Tough-guy
first person narration? Check. But that was all I got out of it. I
think I described it to a friend as "Zelazny fan fiction", which isn't
fair, but that's what it felt like.
Am I being too hard on him? Am I expecting the works to be more like
Roger's than they are? Is the later stuff worth reading?
Since I can't post to the thread in question, if I had to pick an
author to continue Roger's work, it would be Neil Gaiman, with Glen
Cook as runner up.
