Hello all,
I've just did my annual re-reading of Insomnia and have a question.
On page 667 (add them together and you get... 19!) Lois is standing
aside from Ralph and the little bald doctors when the owner of a
"green and somehow sunken light" (or aura) tells Lois to "see [him]",
to "come into the light".
In the next chapter it is then revealed that this "green man" told
Lois to give her earrings to Ralph with which he then fights the
Queenfish and Ed.
No further mention is made of him if I'm not mistaken. Does anyone
have any idea who this person might be? Has he/she/it been mentioned
in another novel by King?
Anrie

I think there is a "green man" elsewhere, but can't remember.
I've thought that green (the opposite of red (Crimson)) man was some
kind of anti-Crimson King.
I have been waiting ever since for some other explanation since, without
one, this is the worst f--king dues ex machina in the history of modern
supernatural fiction (excluding all of Dean Koontz's work).<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ --> >> Stay informed about: Insomnia Query |

Hey, some of us think that it's a bloody brilliant book, you know? It
is a bit weird though, how everyone seems to either love it or hate
it.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ --> >> Stay informed about: Insomnia Query |

"As I told you, I HAVE written plotted novels, but the results, in books
like Insomnia and Rose Madder, have not been particularly inspiring."
Stephen King, On Writing Pg. 169
You are right though, theres people who like everything. I know at least 1
adult male who for some reason thinks Britney Spears is brilliant. go
figure.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ --> >> Stay informed about: Insomnia Query |

Well, I'm pretty sure she doesn't write her own music. Therefore, she
can't be judged on the music. I'd say there are some other categories
for which she could rightly be called "brilliant" so I think that
adult male is right.

the CD but thats about as far as i'm willing to go.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ --> >> Stay informed about: Insomnia Query |

I finished Insomnia last night, took me weeks. Hated it. *almost* enough
to put me off King for life. I wasn't that fond of IT either. I've begun
Night Shift today and hope it's better than the last two.

> I finished Insomnia last night, took me weeks. Hated it.
I wonder if the negative reaction to Insomnia comes from several places:
1) This is King's attempt to write about being old. He's done childhood
and adulthood to death (no sick pun intended), so we wanted to go after
being old, and worked too hard on the concept instead of working on a
good story.
2) He was trying too hard to tell a DT story, but one where the reader
didn't need to have read any DT books to get (don't think he succeeded).
(On a side note, I thought there was too much DT stuff in Insomnia for
it to stand on its own as a novel...then I read Black House and saw what
a *real* DT tie-in looked like).
3) It was too long. Too much time is spent developing Ralph and not
enough on the story. Now that I think about it, this novel could have
been better if it was of the Rose Madder / Gerald's Game length.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ --> >> Stay informed about: Insomnia Query |

I liked Insomia... thought Ralph and Lois were interesting characters although
I did think that the CK scene was too cartoonish.

Yeah, gotta go with you on that one. I can't really recall what
happened. Wasn't Ralph flying into an airplace, then met the CK and
defeated him in some numb-nuts way?<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ --> >> Stay informed about: Insomnia Query |

You did fine
The climax wasn't too much to my liking but I thought there were some pretty
interesting characters. Of course, I was mainly interested in Insomnia because
I was curious about post _It_ Derry.
