To repeat Steuard's question, "What makes your forum special"?
Instead of answering it you just posted an identical announcement,
under a new subject line.

How many times are you planning to post the announcement, anyway?

And being as how you're such a fan, I'd think you'd want to spell
"Rivendell" correctly?

While I don't approve spamming the group like this (this is _already_ a
LotR discussion forum; why do we want another one?), this is the first
time I've seen a .info site. When did .info become a top-level domain?

It's been around for a couple of years, as I recall. The ISP I work for
hasn't seen any yet, and I'm not too sure how many registrars will sell
..info domains.

Wow jump down my throat or what!! im sorry if i posted it twice it was
a mere mistake!!

As for the forum its very friendly with great people and a chance to
choose a race with which you compete with the other races in quizes.

The lls are not a mistake, it has bee proven that most of the world say
it with one l and so the admins thought to represent the majority they
would go with that. And hell why not be different!

If you have a great forum then thats fine im just mentioning about ours

Good one, Speaking Clock!

I just find myself wondering -- what's the difference in pronouncing
Rivendell with one "l" as opposed to two? If it were a Welsh word,
that might make sense...

What does it even mean to say that "most of the world say it with one l"?
I would assume most English speaking people rhyme "Rivendell" with "dell"
and "bell" and "spell". [*] There are many words with one l that also
rhyme with "dell", such as "repel", and "rebel" (the verb, not the noun),
and the world "el" itself. Some others, such as "tunnel" have
a different vowel sound. If I pronounced "Rivendell" using the
vowel sound in "tunnel", I think it would come out as "Rivendull". Smile

Stephen

[*] Does "Rivendell" get translated into other languages? It should
according to Tolkien's guidelines, I believe.

I'm having a hard time parsing this paragraph.

Most 'english' names are translated. In Danish Rivendell is called Kløvedal
(somewhat like 'cleve-valley').
I much prefer to read Tolkien in english though.

hey.. let's give this guy a break. If I was at the rivvondale forums, and
someone advertized a usenet forum in which in-depth discussions of canonic
texts took place, I'm sure I'd be thrilled to learn about it.
And I don't really feel all that spammed by Gildor's post.

I don't recall any 'modern' English name that isn't translated
('modern' because the Rohirric names are not translated).

Aye. 'Kløve' as in cleave (in the sense of splitting) and dal as in
dale or dell Wink

We are sadly lacking a tradition for writing and reading dialect and
older Danish, which makes the differences in vernacular between the
characters miniscule at best -- that was, for me, something of a
revelation when I first read Tolkien in English: the number of
different vernaculars he managed to write in.

You could always go for the language of the Eddas and Sagas. It aint
Danish, but it *is* older. (There aint much written in Old Danish
anyway.)
