Has any one else written stories based on Tolkien's work? If they
have, are any of them any good?

It depends on how you feel about fanfiction. Some of it is pretty good; a
lot of it is bad; some is downright blasphemous. But there are a couple of
good archives. Try Stories of Arda. They have pretty high standards, and
they don't allow slash.

There's a school of thought that says that the second Bush administration is a
retelling of the Scouring of the Shire. Clearly President Bush would be Lotho,
Vice President Cheney would be Saruman, and John Ashcroft, I suppose, would be
Bill Ferny.
