No, I don't think I do want to find out how badly that hurts. Getting my
finger caught in a door just hard enough to bruise badly was quite painful
enough. {wry but sympathetic smile}

Roses apparently like the weather in my area, and I follow
the instructions on pruning the bushes religiously. I used
to take the care-for-roses book, open to the page on how to
prune, out to the yard with me when I pruned.

Don't really fertilize as much as the books recommend, and I
use only the environmentally friendly pesticides, not often.
So I have rinse any cut flowers veeeeery thoroughly if I
bring them in the house. But they definitely smell rose-y,
not odorless like store-bought flowers.

And, at the moment, the rose bushes are going bonkers.
Boom. Nothing, to almost can't see the leaves for the
flowers, in less than two weeks.

Ok, only one bush has *that* many flowers. But the rest are
rosing up nicely.

the battle for getting plants to do well. {SMILE}

That is nice. Mom much prefers roses with scents. The scentless ones just
aren't the same. {Smile}

That is nice. I don't think I've ever seen roses do that well around
here. They prefer more pole-ward climes. {Smile}

It did heal pretty quickly, although I went through a lot of Band-Aids
during that week. (Even the "waterproof" bandages don't really stand up
to handwashing when they're on the tip of a finger.)

I know. I'm trying not to use that finger in ways that require washing.

I don't think it was the mayo, but I wish I knew what it was. (After
discovering the injury and sticking a Band-Aid on, I went back and
discovered that I had in fact left bloody prints on the mayo and
mustard. Fortunately I somehow missed my son's sandwich.)

Ouch, ouch, ouch!

If you haven't already, I highly recommmend splurging on a pair of rose
gloves. Our house already had roses when we bought it, and my husband
convinced me to spend the extra $ on the fancy gloves. I've managed to
avoid stabbing myself so far.

Roses are pretty, but not something I would choose to plant on my own. I
prefer plants that don't need much fussing over, and also ones without
thorns The ones that I have now will stay as long as they don't get too

The rose gloves I've seen here tend to be heavy rubber. And
most rose work needs to be done in summer. Heavy rubber and
100 degree weather just don't mix. I do use the
medium-heavy leather work gloves when I work on the roses...
I got careless, that first time out pruning for the year,
and the roses rewarded my carelessness. Ungrateful plants.

Like yours, these roses were here when I bought the house.
Most were healthy enough that I would feel badly pulling
them out. (They aren't nearly as bothered by the bugs as I
am. I suppose a spotted flower petal doesn't bother a
rosebush, as long as the flower is sound enough to attract
bees.)

Even healthier now. Following that pruning advice seems to
have *really* worked. I couldn't when I moved in, but I can
now sneer at the neighbors. <sing-song>"My roses are
healthier than youuurs."</sing-song>

I won't plant more roses. Not in this climate -- what I
plant myself is mostly labeled "drought tolerant" in
gardening books. I pulled out a couple of the rose bushes
last autumn -- a healthy rose bush can tolerate a few bugs,
but those two bushes weren't healthy, weren't tolerating,
and were barely producing leaves, never mind flowers.
Replacement plants are drought tolerant. And thorn-free.

And should be a *lot* less work!

OWIE!

I have some idea. I've seen a nice exhibit at science
museums, a sculpture of a human body with the body part
sizes proportional to the number of nerve endings in them.
The finger tips were kinda big...

Agreed, Ouch!

My *last* similar injury was when I tried to close a very sharp pocket
knife and my fat finger was nearly removed for being in-the-way. It took
over 6 months to feel mostly normal instead of like it had a thick
callus on it.

And yes, I do similarly stupid things often enough that people at work
avoid me when I have sharp objects - they do not want my blood on them.

Fortunately, this one shouldn't take months to heal. I'm anticipating
more like 1-3 weeks, but we'll see. I might be luckier than I think. {Smile,

Think of a paper cut...it can come from very thin paper. Computer operators
usually learn the hard way to be VERY careful when working around a
high-speed continuous-forms printer; the paper moving through the mechanism
has all of the user-friendly attitude of a bandsaw, and sometimes the same
results. (Today's office printers don't have the danger because their paper
moves far, far slower than would be acceptable in a mainframe environment.)

DH sliced off the tip of his right thumb with a jointer/planer some
years back. *wince*
Luckily a good surgeon was on duty in the ER that day. Fixed the nerve
endings and closed the wound.
Only problem, it has healed with a rather bulbous end -- looks sort of
like a big toe, rather than a thumb.
And makes grasping some small things (peeling covers off of some food
packages, for example) rather difficult -- to sometimes almost impossible.

Ugh, rubber does not sound good. I got a pair at the local nursery with
soft leather hands, and heavy suede gauntlets. Of course, since I threw
away the packaging long ago, the only tag inside reads "Made in
Pakistan," so I can't tell you who makes them.

I don't worry about the bugs on them, but I do try to prune and deadhead
as needed. I looked in the back yard this morning and discovered a bunch
of pink roses that opened overnight. (Well, maybe over two nights, since
I wasn't home long enough during the day yesterday to look.)

I did pull out one rose last year, because it looked really sad, and was
occupying the only sunny spot in the front yard (I planted irises and
lilies instead). I discovered WHY it looked so sad: when we dug up the
flower bed, we found that whoever planted the rose bush simply made a
little hole in the clay and stuck it in. We ended up digging out the
entire bed and putting actual dirt into it.

Having done something similar, I would agree with you, Victoreia.

Toes have LOTS of nerve endings protected by nails, too. Losing a
nail on the toe leads to MANY interesting consequences I could have
lived without.
