Why has Misty started writing porn into her 500 kingdom books? I read
_The Fairy Godmother_. It was pretty good except for the porn junk in the
middle. Then when I read _One Good Knight_ I thought she had gotten
smart and didn't put any in. So last week _Fortune's Fool_ came out in
paper back. And she did it again. She has written a lot of good books
without porn, so why has she suddenly started putting it in? It
certainly doesn't add anything to the story.

[blink] There was porn? Really? I've only read _The Fairy Godmother_
once, but
I don't remember any porn......

Bill, if you thought those were too risque, then I STRONGLY suggest you
steer clear of the Catteni series by Anne McCaffrey. I don't recall what
the "pilot" short story was called, but Anne McCaffrey herself called it a
venture into "soft porn". (She was HUNGRY at the time, and it sold!) This
doesn't diminish her Dragonriders or "Tower and Hive" series at all in my
mind, it simply ahows her versatility as an author.

I've read the Catteni series, and they are pretty good. The porn is
minimal, and not very invasive. The original short story was much
stronger. What Misty has started here is in my opinion too strong.
The big thing is that I don't think porn is necessary. Many really good
authors have written a lot of books that don't go into the details.
I am quite happy if the people in the book fall in love and wind up as
couples. I just don't want to climb into bed with them.
And in any case Misty is too good a writer to need porn. She can write
a good book without it.

"The Thorns of Barevi" - Can be found in the collection "Get off the
Unicorn".
I wasn't aware that there was any more of it - It seemed like an
interesting premise, even without the "porn" (if you can even call
something that mild "porn")
Care to clue me as to what the "rest" of the series is? I follow Anne's
stuff (She and Misty are a coin-flip for my favorite "escape fiction" -
I've even chased down some of the obscure "Merlin" (the semi-telepathic
german sheperd and his handler, whose name I forget ATM) tales - One
example of which is also in "Get Off the Unicorn" under the title "The
Great Canine Chorus") but I don't recall seeing any more of the Catteni
tales.
"Restoree" is another of her stories that I think might have had some
potential to grow into a series, but as far as I know, it never went
anywhere beyond the original volume. Probably because it wasn't too long
after that one that the Pern tales really (Erm... pardon the pun...)
took wing. If I recall the publication chronology right, Dragonflight
(in the form of what later became the first part of the novel by the
same name) did pretty well in one of the magazines (Analog?) then "The
Littlest Dragonboy" came along (showed up as the closer in "Get Off The
Unicorn", among other places) and from there... WHOOSH! The dragonriders
became the next best thing since sliced bread.

No, wait, there was more about 'Merlin'!?? I remember that short story
from 'Get off the Unicorn' -- I still like McCaffrey's earliest short
stories more than much of her later work. WHERE can I read more of Merlin?
As for the later 'Thorns of Bavari' follow-ons... I believe they began with
the novel Freedom's Landing. Listed as the 'Catteni' or 'Freedom' series.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Catteni_Series
I may not read much of McCaffrey's later work, but I'm still blown away by
the idea that she publishes anything at all at 90+ years of age.

I liked 'Restoree', in spite of the feeling I occasionally suffer when
reading it that there may be something too pre-Women's Lib about it. But I
like it anyway.

*giggle* I've read some erotica that was most definitely porn. The 500
Kingdom books aren't it.

Yeah, at least 4-5 more shorts, though it's been long enough that I
can't even say where I found them anymore. I remember stumbling across
one in an older SF magazine (Analog? Most likely, since that's the only
one I ever had regular access to) and two or three others in various
anthologies, including one that wasn't particularly "Anne-typical" type
stuff - but I just can't think of any details about it now.

Yeah, that is pretty impressive, isn't it? It looks like, based on
what I've seen so far, "Zodd" is going to do fairly well picking up the
mantle of "dragonmaster" - His "trial outing" with her - "Dragon's Kin"
was pretty good, although I thought the ending was kinda heavy on
"happily ever after" formula, The exploration of the whers was good all
on its own. Still haven't found time to get to his follow-up, "Dragon's
Blood" - One of these days...

Yah, it didn't really age well, but even so, it's a decent tale, with a
rather odd-seeming (and potentially interesting) "bad guy" race. Not to
mention opening up the possibility of yet another "Anne-iverse".

She took Thorns and expanded it to 4 novels. Thorns, without the soft
porn end, was the start of the series. The novels were:
Freedom's Landing
Freedom's Choice
Freedom's Chance
Freedom's Ransom
Basically instead of hopping into the sack they headed back to the city
and got caught in a riot. Then the people who were picked up in the
riot were sent off to colonize a vacant planet. The series is how they
survived and went on to achieve freedom for everybody. I won't say
anymore, you should probably go ahead and read the books.
The series was pretty good, although I thought that Ransom was not
nearly as good as the first 3.

Oh... Thought those were set "otherwhere/otherwhen" - I've been looking
"through" them for a while now 'cause the cover blurbs didn't strike me
as "interesting enough".

Just to straighten out a minor error, the first part of Dragonflight was
serialized in Analog as "Weyr Search", and won the Hugo award for Best
Novella. The second half was serialized in Analog as "Dragonrider" and won
the Nebula the following year. McCaffrey wasn't an unknown quantity
however, she had already earned major street cred from the Helva stories.

Yah, can't forget about Helva. Although for me, those were discovered
about the time White Dragon came out as I started hunting for her "back
catalog" (Desperately hoping to find more dragons, of course!)
Sadly, it's my opinion that the "shell people" stories went down the
chute quite rapidly when she started doing more of them - One or two of
them were OK, but for the most part, it was too obviously a "make a few
bucks and support an upcoming author" thing. The... Well, "heart", for
lack of a better way to put it, just wasn't there for me. However I did
quite enjoy seeing her link the Shell People and Crystal Singer
universes (Um... pedant judgement call requested: "universi"?) together.
I'm pretty sure she did the same thing with the "Dinosaur Planet/Planet
Pirates/Death Of Sleep" books, as well, but I can't recall the exact
mechanism - Something to do with Lunzi catching a ride on a BB ship?
Having her main universes "clump together" they way she eventually did
was, for reasons I can't quite explain, "the icing on the cake" for me.
I know she has said, many times, that Pern will always remain isolated,
but I'd really like to see her tie up that loose end by perhaps having a
BB ship come through (whether noticed by the Pernese or not, though
"not" would likely be best) and find a reason to "officially" red-flag
the system once and for all (perhaps have a BB ship doing survey work
get damaged severely by a cloud of thread that's making the crossing,
and just barely make it back to Regulus with the tale, without ever
actually noticing/making contact with the Pernese?) rather than having
it hanging out there "waiting to be accidentally re-discovered". I know
that there was something done along those lines with the rescue of the
Tubberman clan, but while it red-flagged the planet/system, it also left
Pern hanging "who knows where?" - I'm thinking it would be a good idea
to tie it in tightly to her Shell People/Crystal Singer/Death Of Sleep
universe as tightly as I'd like to see - especially with the CV-drive
equipped BB ships (including Helva herself...) floating around and
potentially able to find "just about anything" while exploring, and
thereby ending the Pernese' isolation from the rest of the galaxy.

I don't remember any porn, either. In fact, I would be quite happy to
let my 13 and very nearly 12 year old daughters read them if they
wanted to. So far they haven't wanted to, as they are happily reading
their way through Pern and PTerry but at some stage they are likely to
want to pick them up.
