You'll notice I said 'the Helva stories', not the shell-person stories or
the B/B stories.
The Ship Who Sang
The Ship Who Mourned
The Ship Who Killed
Dramatic Mission
The Ship Who Dissembled
I read all the later collaborations, and to the best of my memory, ML,
Sterling, Margerat Ball, and Jody Lynn Nye never got to play with Helva,
they all created their own shell-persons.

the way I think of this is that just because the same background types are
present, it isn't necessarily the same universe. Andre Norton established
basic background institutions and parallels that fit into virtually all of
her science fiction (as opposed to fantasy, not inclusive in this specific
case) stories, the Patrol, Central Control, the Guild, Free Traders and so
on, with the same races (especially the Zacathans) appearing widely in the
background. However, it's clear that not all these take place in the same
universe. The Earth of The Stars Are Ours (and Starborn) and the Earth of
Beastmaster (and sequels) have clearly different histories, although
Hosteen Storm imports some Astran duocorns as breeding stock. We see how
this works most clearly in Android At Arms, where the protagonist moves
between two universes, both with the same institutions, but subtly
different.
The same thing applies (for me) with the Helva universe, the Kallishandra
universe, the Planet Pirates universe, and Pern universe. They can
cross-pollinate and still each be in their own universe.

She still has a way to go for that. She turns 82 in about a week.
Now Andre Norton wrote her last novel (Three Hands For Scorpio) at 90, and
Jack Williamson wrote his last novel (The Stonehenge Gate) at 96

Heh. The proverbial army of bored housewives (and other, less
stereotyped readers) who have made romance novels the immense industry
they are today would beg to differ with you.
I mean, seriously, it's easy to pooh-pooh romance novels if you don't
read them, but when you look at them seriously, it's amazing how huge
they really are, and how much they often drive other parts of the
publishing industry. (Romance novels were being published as ebooks
successfully long before anyone else got into the act, for instance.)

Leaving aside the matter of whether what romance novels contain _is_
in fact "porn," I brought this thread up with Misty in instant message
today (I play City of Heroes with her), and she said (and gave me
permission to quote), "A good sell on a fantasy hardback is 50,000
copies. A good sell on a romance hardback is 200,000. Get into the
realms of Judith Krantz and you are talking _millions._ And that is
just a _good_ sell, not a NYT sell."

Given those numbers I can understand Misty's wanting to do the cross
genre thing. But I still wish she could manage it without the porn.
Of course there is my secret addiction to MaryJanice Davidson. There
I really have to watch it for the signs that some more porn is coming
so I can scan ahead. But she does write well. Not what you might
call great literature, but she writes some entertaining stories. If
you watch out for the porn.

I'm afraid I've still got his first outing on my 'get to it one of these

I almost consider it a charm of 'Restoree', that it so reflects -- in spite

And, in a way, that it was *not* made into another 'Anne-verse'. So few of
her early works escaped sequelization. ;>
