I'm with you, on one level. I don't like "romance" in my fantasy and
sci fi books. I find it rather boring and highly unrealistic. But on
the other hand, I do read and write the better stuff on the internet.
Uhm, and on the 3rd hand I'm asexual and don't write/read it to "get
my rocks off"... It rarely affects me.

Ok, back to the porn in our beloved fantasy novels... the only romance
I've read in a book that I liked was a book where I knew there would
be romance involved. So it wasn't like all "here's some great fantasy
story BAMOMGSEXSCENE! ok, now more great fanta-BAMANOTHERSEXSCENE-sy
story".

AND this book wasn't not your every-day run-of-the-mill romance
story... I think that's why I liked it so much, it was strange and not
typical in any sense. But also not safe for talk here... I think I've
already said way too much in the above sentences as is... let me just
add it was also the sweetest and most real romance in a story I've
read.

Wondering when, if ever, she'll find another realistic romantic
relationship in a fantasy novel,

It's easy to pooh-pooh a lot of things unless you read them...

I don't like them, and I've tried to. But I'm glad romance novels
have made such a big success of themselves. I've even met people who
finally got into reading thanks to them... my coworker, for one, told
me she never read until another coworker's wife gave her her first
romance book... then she tried to put down my genres while making
romance novels seem so different and "stuff happens in them that would
never happen in real life, they take you to another world"... yes, and
sci fi is just too darn real to take me away. Wink Now she has quite
the collection of books, every single one of them romance.

They may not be my cup of tea but I see how others would/might like
them.

Now if only the yaoi industry could be so easily accepted and make it
big like them. I mean, they're practically the same with just 2
differences: they're graphic novels (comic books) aside from a few
story books, and instead of being traditional heterosexual romance
stories, they are homosexual romance stories. I see their acceptance
a few decades in coming. At least.

I've read enough of them to know they aren't particularly for
me....though I make exception for Barbara Delinsky and anyone else who
can write as good and gripping a story with the romance as she does.
Came across her by accident (mixed up the name with someone else) and am
happy about the chance meeting.

Hey, if it makes her happy, more power to her.

Oh that's definitely going to take a while. Graphic novels aren't very
mainstream at all yet and the whole homosexuality thing will need a fair
amount of time to be accepted among the fearful. They'll have to get
used to it being a fact of life first.

I'm impressed by all of them. To keep writing that late in life is doing
pretty good. {Smile}

I'm even more impressed by what folks said in the beginning of Andre
Norton's _Taste_of_Magic._ Apparently after an operation, she had a
terrible time trying to write again. Eventually, at the urging of a friend,
she put the book aside, and went on to something less frustrating. {smile}
I do have to admire that. It isn't easy to put aside an activity that
you've gained as much acclaim at. Dad still wishes that Robert Heinlein had
done that; he isn't happy with the guy's later stuff. {amused Smile}

Back when I used to follow the Heinlein newsgroup ... <wink>

There is a definite schism in the fan base: Early Stuff and Later Stuff.

I actually enjoy all of it, and re-read a lot of the "later stuff" even
though Heinlein himself said his stuff was worth reading (maybe) once. I
think he'd be mightily amused at the battles between the Early and Later
fans.

Somehow I'm not surprised. They seem to be different enough, they would
appeal to different people. {Smile, wink}

I'm pretty sure Dad has re-read it all. He just re-reads the earlier
stuff more often. {Smile}

I find it easiest to think of Early and Late Heinleins as being by
different authors altogether.

I happen to like both. At least, I did the last time I read any. It
has been a while -- so much to read, so little time.

Certainly, for the purposes of recommending Heinlein novels to
Heinlein newbies, I'm careful to specify particular novels and not to
simply name the author and leave it at that.

Battles? Geez. That's taking it a bit far. I mean, either you like
a novel or you don't -- there is no serious reason for attacking
someone else just because they have a different opinion. (Not that
this fact stops me from teasing my mother about her fondness for
Proust or Joyce.)

That may be the best approach. {Smile}

Actually, Dad has all his books, and I think he's re-read them all. He
just prefers the early ones, and likes to complain about the drop in
quality. {Smile}

That sounds like a very good idea under the circumstances. {SMILE}

True, but some people take this sort of thing very seriously. {lop-sided

Some people haven't realized that the world is full of nutballs; all I
have to do is drive down the freeway to be reminded. (Truly?
Changing three lanes within 3 seconds seemed like a safe thing to do?
At 65+ mph? That driver is nuts!) I can't take the nutballs too
seriously; that would drive *me* nuts. :>

Only twice???
Huh. I've read various RAH stories anywhere from twice to 5-6-7 times
maybe.
Juvies, early stuff, late stuff...
Of course, he's the one who hooked me on SF when I was probably about 12
years old.
I think I have all (or almost all) of his output in paperback here.

Discovered his stuff at my high school library and enjoyed it very much.
Own a copy of most of it and have re-read several times. I 'specially
like "The Star Beast" if that's the correct title for the one I want.
The one where the princess has been away from home raising "John Thomases".

You've hit on my RAH reading algorithm -- if it was in a library when
I was looking at RAH books, I've read it. Otherwise, maybe not. :>

My favorite, currently, is 'Have Spacesuit -- Will Travel'. (Why did
my brain keep thinking 'The Stars My Destination'? That's entirely
the wrong author!) When I was younger, I liked 'Friday' best.

Which Heinleins would you all recommend for a 12 yo boy that has read all
the Harry Dresden books? I have only read a couple of RAH, and so am not
familiar with them.

Yeah, my thought was 'only twice?', too! I'm another one who enjoys
pretty much everything Heinlein wrote and have pretty much all of it
here, some of it in hardcover even! I even like the 'expanded'
versions of things like Stranger although some scenes are better with
tighter editing. I've included a couple of the Juveniles, and even
tried The Moon is A Harsh Mistress in the girls' Night Time reading
schedule and they have really enjoyed it.

Space Family Stone was one of my favourite books when I was 11 or 12.
It was one of the books that me hooked on the whole SF thing.
