Both the books mentioned as favorites above -- 'The Star Beast' and
'Have Spacesuit -- Will Travel'. Any of his "young juveniles", though
some are better than others.

There is a nice list (with plot summaries for the concerned mommy) here:
http://www.geocities.com/NapaValley/1872/juvie.htm

The original 'Podkayne of Mars' had Podkayne dying at the end.
Publisher objected, so the first published version has her surviving.
You might want to check which version he reads, depending on how you
feel about that.

12 years old? *Not* "Friday". Let him find that on his own when he's
a bit older, and hide it from you like a sensible kid.

Don't forget the short stories that RAH produced. My favorite of all his
writings was the short story "Requium" which is written around the Robert
Lewis Stevenson's poem of that name. If the boy hasn't developed an
appreciation for poetry this story, which links the poem to rocket ships,
might help.

Warning: the opening (and only the opening) has a rather racist tone to it,
although it's probably a legitimate description of midwest America
(specifically, Butler, Missouri) when the story was first published in 1940.

I've read Podkayne only once, and that when it was first published as a
serial (in Galaxy?). For whatever reason it never appealed to me, but
despite that negative impression I'll admit that I could forgive RAH a lot
for a groaner of a joke he wrote into it: the story contains a throwaway
line in a scene on Venus, in which there is a passing reference to the
"Tannhäuser Hilton in Venusburg."

I didn't forget the short stories -- at least not that they existed.
I looked at my big fat book of RAH short stories and thought, "Now,
wait, were all of those juvie-ok, or were some not?" Errrrrr...

It's not my favorite, either, in spite of being one of the only (?
few?) juveniles with a female protaganist. But I've heard that some
folks like it a lot.

Thanks. Not reallyconcerned but looking for something that he would find
interesting. Like I said he has read all the Harry Dresden novels as well
as watched Buffy, Angel, and Firefly. He reacts to the romantic scenes like
most kids do to scary stuff. So he'll fast forward through anything like
that. But being 12 he still sees the world in black and white. We're
working on recognizing gray areas.

I admit, the Harry Dresdens stymied me. Does 'Friday' have more grey
areas than the Dresden books? Tough call... but I think the grey
areas in 'Friday' are those most likely to confuse a 12 year old boy
about boy-girl stuff. Let him wait, and get confused in the usual
fashion. (Although, gosh, the Buffy and Spike 'romance' would
generate about the same kind of confusion. Maybe he fast-forwarded
through all that.)

You could try him on some Rex Stout mysteries starring Nero Wolfe. My
brother liked those when he wasn't much older than 12, and there is
almost no romance in them. They are good enough that I like them now!

There are also the usual recommendations that I'm sure this group will
offer -- Diane Duane's Wizards novels, Lloyd Alexander, Terry
Pratchett's works (Johnny and the Dead, A Hat Full of Sky), Anne
McCaffrey's less romantic works (Dragonsinger trilogy), Asimov's 'I,
Robot'... Something else will occur to me right after I hit 'send', I
know it.

I would also highly recommend 'The Star Beast' -- also 'The Rolling
Stones' and 'Time for the Stars'. If he's reasonably mature for a 12
year old, 'Tunnel In The Sky' is a personal favorite.
'Starman Jones', 'Red Planet' and 'Rocketship Galileo' might be a bit
outdated but are still good.
Later, go for 'Have Spacesuit -- Will Travel' and 'Citizen of the
Galaxy'. Even later, get 'Double Star' and 'Starship Trooper'.
I'm sure I'm missing some of the juvies, but I'm too lazy to go Googling
right at the minute.

Those are all great suggestions of course. I'm just trying to remember
for sure without digging things out.....Red Planet *is* the one with
Willis isn't it?

I'd forgotten about Tunnel in the Sky.....I loved that one!

One thing, if he reads Starship Troopers and then wants to see the movie
by the same name....advise him *strongly* that they are not at all the
same and if he expects the story from the book, he will be vastly
disappointed.

He'll be vastly disappointed no matter what he expects or doesn't
expect. Unless he's looking for a movie to use as psychological
torture on an enemy.

Dreadful movie.

sigh.

Well, as a 12 year old, I read and enjoyed :

Starship Troupers
Farmer In The Sky
Time For The Stars
Between Planets

These four were my introduction to RAH and led to Assignment In
Eternity, Star Beast, Moon Is A Hard Mistress and many others. The
Green Hills Of Earth is a good place to start on the Short Stories.

It's not a pun; think of Wagner's operas. Or Google for "Venusburg Music".

if one includes 'mysteries...I could suggest Earl Stanley Gardner(Perry
Mason) and Isaac Asimov 'Black Widowers' series.

No, of course he hasn't read them only twice. Knowing Dad, I'm sure he's
read the Heinleins he wasn't as fond of more often than that! {REALLY BIG
GRIN}

That sounds more likely. Well, maybe as an average. I wouldn't be at all
surprised if he read the stories he likes more than that, and the ones he
didn't as much less. {BIG SMILE}

I don't know how long Dad has been reading Heinlein. Certainly longer
than I've been alive, but he's forty years older than me, so that covers a
bit of a time-span. {Smile}

{glance behind me} Ditto. Dad's paperback collection is directly behind
me, and there's quite a few Heinleins in it. {SMILE}

Mine was "You mean Dad? Of course not!" {REALLY BIG GRIN, wink}

I'll keep an eye out for that one then. I think I need have to check out
Dad's collection again myself. {Smile}

{GRIN} That's my favorite. I LOVED that ending! {REALLY BIG GRIN} Of
course the "family pet" had it's own opinion on raising pets. Especially
"John Thomases." {REALLY BIG GRIN}
