Having just re-read Ringworld Engineers for the umpteenth time,
something continues to confuse me. The maps of Earth, Mars and Kzin...
try as I might, I cannot find any clear reference to them in the
original novel. There's a vague mention of the "spheres of earthlike
worlds" (what? Mars?) but at no point can I find any of the crew
spotting the maps in the great ocean... and certainly, the Hindmost's
claim that they made the journey beneath the maps in Liar seems a bit
off.

Anyone able to offer any clarification?

Do you mean in _Ringworld_? In "The Map Room," p. 219. I don't believe
they identify them by the names "Map of Earth," etc., but they do
recognize that they appear to be two-dimensional projections of maps of
spherical worlds, although they don't guess their scale at the time.

Reread the part where they are in the map room in the castle called
heaven. Thats where the maps are mentioned but the scale and
descriptions are off, its all corrected in engineers.
