You are missing the point. PTerry is trying to avoid not the actual
stealing of ideas - he has far too many ideas of his own to need that -
but the *accusation* of stealing ideas. Unlike the courts, the press
have a "guilty until proved innocent" approach to this sort of thing. If
a speculative idea is posted in a forum which PTerry is known to read
and it appears in a book, somebody somewhere will accuse him of having
nicked it. The papers love an "expose" of the famous. "Successful author
steals ideas" is too good a story to miss. Of course, PTerry could chase
it up and possibly get the story withdrawn and apologised for (in small
print). But that would be a lot of hassle that he could do without, and
even when a story is withdrawn some mud sticks.
Your disclaimer just shows how much you miss the point. To the
non-lawyer, anything which involves dealings with lawyers is an evil.
The very fact that your disclaimer might be thought necessary says that
it shouldn't be posted.
PTerry has many calls on his time. If he sees the Usenet groups as
places where he has to tiptoe around speculation, he will decide his
time is better spent elsewhere. We would like him here, so we would like
him *not* to have to keep his eyes open and his guard up against
(unjustified) accusations of stealing/borrowing/being given ideas, >> Stay informed about: Speculation Warning - Minor Spoliers - 71 Hour Ahmed |

I'll see your two replies, and raise you. One of the two replies I
got said that I was *right* about an annotation [1].
Cheers,
Nigel.
[1] If anyone's interested, it was the "Call me Al" annotation in
Jingo. Especially preen-worthy as PTerry doesn't confirm many
annotations. >> Stay informed about: Speculation Warning - Minor Spoliers - 71 Hour Ahmed |

Hah! *I* got a reply that said I was *wrong* about an annotation, but it
fitted so well he was going to pretend he meant it to happen!

Was that the "Childe Roland" thing?
Oh, *I* came up with a definition and explanation of art he was happy with.
:-p
And he's thanked me for not giving him a copy of my book, in person.

Yup. He's made a few other replies to me[1], most of which were when I was
talking nonsense and he's called me on it, and I think once to confirm an
annotation, but that's the one that sticks in my mind.
[1]I was on afp when he was a regular, rather than an irregular, so "a
few" isn't that big a deal.

Honestly, i don't think another post from him would suffice. The fact
is that he does occasionally post - this means he does occasionally
read - and he has read since the _last_ post saying he left. So another
post saying he left, wouldn't protect him from mudslinging media - as
it /can/ easily be proven that he's gone back on such an announcement
before, and since it /can't/ easily be proven that he isn't lurking
secretly.
If we want to keep Terry away from accusations that can be cooked up by
media, crazy fans (HP anyone? please note I'm not implying anything
about non-crazy HP-fans) and sundry other malicious people - we need to
keep the alt.fan.pratchett and alt.books.pratchett newsgroups clean.
