Punk was a joke back in the 80's. It wasn't until the late 90's, when
70's retro became the fashion that Punk styles were rediscovered by
the masses and hence, the resurgence of the mohawk (and its inbred,
idiot sibling, the fauxhawk) over the past decade.
From about 1985 to about 1997, people with mohawks weren't known as
punks, they were known as poseurs.

The first thing that springs to mind here is "Six-Month Gap".

Dubious bit of reasoning there as it highly depends on where exactly you
are. Certain areas of London have been punk since it originated.

And the UK inflicted the Spice Girls on us, too, so what's your point?
IMO, London and the UK in general (okay, except for Cardiff and maybe
even the rest of Wales) seems to be a black hole from which music
styles can never escape.

That punk wasn't a joke during the 80's, neither were punks known as
poseurs in any general way. Maybe to you and your friends but that's
hardly a definitive sample.

Dude, punk was already a parody of itself in the US by 1982. Urgh!
more or less documented the very moment that punk jumped the shark
over here. Might have been different in the UK, but that just proves
my point. The UK is where styles go to die; the Beatles are the
exception that prove the rule.
