Archived from groups: rec>arts>comics>marvel>xbooks (more info?)

I'm just wondering, but does anyone think Storm will ever contribute
anything to Uncanny X-Men?

When she showed up, I think she made a comment about leaving Black
Panther's side for a while because the X-Men needed her? But...they
didn't. At the time, they were just setting up their new home, had no
visible future problems, and already had an excess of mutants present.

Since then, she hasn't really done anything. She has served
absolutely zero purpose. To be blunt, the creative team itself
hasn't even bothered with her. She's pretty much just been a
background character, pasted into a few panels every now and then
just so that Marvel can say "Hey, Uncanny X-Men includes Storm!"

So far, she has done what? She's flown a few places, but she is
hardly the only flier. Though she certainly is the least present
flier. She threw some punches in the background of a big fight scene.
But everyone acts like a brawler now, and even there she was just
background filler. In the chase in the most recent issue, she
effectively just quits bothering after a couple of panels. Somehow
completely misses a speeding bike twice with darn near walls of
lightning, and then just goes and stands next to Wolverine as he
gets ready to fight. The writers didn't even bother to write her
getting knocked out of battle. She just quits trying.

So, does anyone think the writers will ever bother justifying
Storm's presence? Actually bother to use her in a story? Freaking
Dazzler has contributed more to the book just by showing up at the
hospital/infirmary and singing a couple of shows.

(Yes, Beast hasn't exactly been burning up the pages of the stories
either. But it isn't like Beast had anywhere else to be.)

The Avengers maybe?
Like he was some 25 years ago?
O, man, that's practically a full generation!
Well, as they say, time flies...

Give them time...they're still re-establishing Uncanny as the flagship
book and setting up the whole X-army approach so they're going to have
tons of X-characters coming and going...and Storm's appearance here
might be to help set up the internal conflict that is the focus of the
Worlds Apart mini...she may not be intended to do much since she has
her own mini and all...that said, her role in Astonishing is the one
that doesn't really work for me.

In the most recent HULK, she tells the She-Hulk over the telephone that
she and Tchalla are doing "royalty things" so Storm cannot join a
She-Hulk led posse versus the Red Hulk.

So Storm's uselessness as a super may be related to her placing higher
priorities on social engagements and/ or scewing her husband.

If it were that, that would be fine. But it is more the opposite.
Uncanny has pretty much written Storm as blowing off T'Challa and
"royalty things" in order to rejoin the X-Men. She's apparently moved
to the west coast for an indeterminate amount of time because the
X-Men needed her.

Except that she rejoined when the X-Men didn't need her, and she
hasn't mattered in any of the situations that have arisen since she
arrived. She isn't blowing off the battles. She's being shown as
present. She just is always in a background and/or irrelevant role.

I vaguely recall she was there for Magneto and the Celestial, but
only did some flying or something? If Angel hadn't been written as
doing something important elsewhere, they wouldn't even have had a
use for her there, from what I recall.

When the X-Men do their big assault on the Hellfire Cult base,
she's part of the battle. Well, she's shown fighting hand to hand
with some generic cultists in the background of one or two panels.
She's completely interchangable with nearly any other character, and
the reader would have missed nothing had she not been shown at all.

When the X-Men chase Empath, she is present and active. She just
has absolutely no effect on the chase. The writers don't even
bother with having Empath disable her, despite having him do that
to everyone else that attacked him. No, Storm just decides to quit
trying. Instead she lands and stands next to Wolverine as he gets
ready to give it his shot. (Well, Storm does do one other thing.
She's the one that tells Scott that they have everything under
control, right before Empath starts rolling over them, which causes
Scott to stay back at the base so he can fall victim to Red Queen.)

Storm not being there at all would be an improvement, because
as is her presence just doesn't make any sense. Other than the
obvious reason that people working on the Xbooks want her present.

Or she really didn't want to go hang with the girls and used her husband
as an excuse to "not be able to".
