I would hope so - playing the jawbone of a *live* donkey would be
extremely interesting

Yes, it *is* a funny line, which is why it's not worth making a big
deal of it. Although for those of us who know "better" such a slip
can detract from the line's effect.

TBH, I'd never heard of it. Percussion is a broad field and I've
played a lot of different instruments over the decades, but I still
find myself learning.
Learning is good.

Definition of a philistine - someone being assaulted by the jawbone of
an ass.

Indeed. Donkeys are not known for their tendency to co-operate.

I would say that the assembly as a whole is a valve, but the bit you
actually operate is a key. Most keys, in instrument nomenclature, seem
to be a bit you have to press down to operate the instrument. There is a
difference, however, between keys on pianos etc and the finger-operated
bits on brass instruments, in that pressing the keys on a piano makes
the noise, wheres on a brass instrument it only modifies the noise,
which is made elsewhere, at the mouthpiece. >> Stay informed about: TAMAHER - pointing out a howler of a mistake |

I'm sorry, I think you'll find that the 'noise'[1] on my teacher's[2]
piano is made when an object hits the strings - quite some way from the
keyboard and connected by an intricate chain of machinery.
A mechanical valve, on the other hand, opens or closes a passage to
permit or stop the flow of a fluid. But on the other other hand the
'keys' on my oboe work by opening or closing holes which in turn governs
the pitch of the note the oboe emits.
So perhaps this whole argument is not worth the breath we've spent on it.
[1] Noise! Noise! I could have lived with sound, but Noise?
[2] I have a digital piano

Wouldn't that be something more like this?

Although on the other hand, Johnson's pipe organs (such as the one at
Unseen University or the Magpyr's castle) seem to work pretty much the
way they're supposed to. Maybe his design quirks don't extend to
musican instruments?

Considering how many wars have to do with population pressure and limited
resources, "make love not war" may be a self-defeating concept.

Ridcully might disagree. But then, I'm not sure if the "Musical Pipes
Enhancement" in the Archchancellor's shower properly counts as a
"musical instrument" or "plumbing".
Musical plumbing, maybe? >> Stay informed about: TAMAHER - pointing out a howler of a mistake |
