I've managed to get leave to attend the Tolkien Society seminar at the
end of June in London. I suppose that it will not surprise very many
that I've made it a priority to attend this year, when the subject is
'Freedom, Fate and Choice in Middle-earth'
<http://www.tolkiensociety.org/seminar/index.html>
Does anyone else from the newsgroups have plans to attend (Christopher
Kreuzer, obviously, but others)?
This means that I will be in London from Friday afternoon the 27th of
June and until Sunday afternoon, and based on the very positive
experience I had meeting up with Christopher a couple of years ago, I
thought it'd be great to meet up for a drink or just a chat, if
somebody's in the neighbourhood.

I sure wish I could go but I am stranded here in Canada on
the West Coast -- the furthest opposite strand of the Uttermost West,
as it were. In fact you can't hardly be any more uttermost around here
without getting your feet wet.
Still, I have a Ring -- assuredly not one of the Great Rings, but
an Engineer's Iron Ring; a mere essay in the ring-making craft.
If it gives me power according to my stature then my stature must
be fairly meager.
For instance if I, wearing this Ring were to close my eyes and visualize
the Tolkien Society Seminar and bump my heels together three times --
just about nothing would happen. So if there's magic in this Ring
I haven't found the way to unleash it, and Gandalf has not been by
lately to advise me. Not only that, if I were to heat it up in
an ordinary Hobbit's fireplace and drop it into my hand, the only
firey letter in sight would be an "O"-shaped brand on my palm.
So unless some Other Power is at work, regrettably from this place
and time it looks very unlikely that I would be able to join you
and Mr. Kreuzer.

One of these days, I'll get that far uttermost. I haven't made it past
Vancouver/Whistler, but there's an old friend with a winery on the
Island...

I probably will, though it will probably be some time. I'm not sure of
the formalities involved, but I would of course defer to the wishes of
the Tolkien Society if they should, for instance, want me to wait until
the proceedings are published. And in any case I won't be putting the
final touches in until after the seminar

I would like to stress that the Tolkien Society is a thoroughly
heretical organization with a very shallow understanding of
"research". I myself, being only a small servant of Truth, have
spotted several thousand errors in their theories and claims, and that
only in the past 60 seconds, whilst simultaneously ironing my robes,
juggling 12 carrots, whistling a Rimsky-Korsakov concerto, and writing
a poem with my right foot. My point being, it is not really hard to
unravel their mistakes.
I will be in the area in June, but I doubt I can be bothered to attend
the seminar. I will probably just organize a fringe meeting on it,
"Exposing the Tolkien Society's Lies and False Thoughts About the
Facts Proven in HoME XXIII, pp. 347-351". You're all welcome to attend
and leave a little donation. I'll bring my rectal didgeridoo, in case
the evening gets informal.

Of course it is -- all the more reason to be present to spread the
Truth of Morambar (or some other Truth of your choice -- but, as
really ought to go without saying -- *always* a CHOCKLIT Truth!).

There's going to be a meet-up arranged on Friday evening this week,
and other Tolkien enthusiasts (of any TEUNC / UFAT / Fredonian /
Rogsylvanian / Other persuasion and affiliation) are welcome. I'll
post here as soon as I know the when and where, and of course, if any
of you are in London it would be great to see you there!

Here're the details:
The venue for the Friday gathering is Edwards Bar in Hammersmith.
This has been chosen for being easy to find, rather than for any
aesthetic reasons! It is also reasonably close to Roehampton for
those who may have arrived there earlier in the day, and also easy to
reach by public transport from other parts of London.
The address is 40 Hammersmith Broadway, Hammersmith, London, W6 7AB.
It is easily reached from both Hammersmith tube stations (the
District and Piccadily line branch is under the nearby shopping mall,
which has the bus station on top of it, and the Hammersmith and City
line branch is across the road in the other direction).
I plan to be there from about 7. Christopher Kreuzer mentions that we
might change to another pub later on, so if you wish to be sure to be
able to find us, you can e-mail me and get my mobile number, so you
can text me.

How is Christopher Kreuzer? Did he explain why he has been absent
from the Tolkien newsgroups for so long? If you can contact him,
please warn him that unless he returns soon, I will place a curse on
him that will haunt him during his next _seven_ lives! ^_^
