Post subject: Tolkienian boat name
Archived from groups: rec>arts>books>tolkien (more info?)

Hello all,

I am trying to come up with a name for my little sailboat. I would
like it to be some kind of Middle Earth reference.

At first i thought of naming it something like Earendil or Tar-
Aldarion but on further thought I realized those would be kind of
egotistical.

So then I tried to come up with names that might be humorous. Winged
Balrog or Beruthiel's Cat.

Those didn't seem quite right.

I then went back to Earrame or Vingilot.

However, now i am leaning towards the translated version of those
which i have in my books as "Sea Wing" and "Foam Flower".

Has anyone ever named or seen a boat with a Tolkien name?

Any suggestions?

Many thanks.

Withywindle

Too bad we don't have names for Bombadil's boat, or for the Elvish boats
the Fellowship used.

Or what about 'Starwards' (Elenna) or 'The Gift' (Andor -- without the
'Land of' part) . . .

Though it might of course be seen as a bit unfortunate to name a boat
after the Downfallen Wink

One might also go for something a bit less known -- one of Aldarion's
ships, for instance: the Númerrámar (the West-wings), the Eämbar, or
the Palarran (the Far-wanderer).

On the other hand, I would say that Alcarondas (Ar-Pharazôn's great
ship in which he sailed against Aman) would be out of the question --
for me at least.

One could, of course, also follow the long tradition of giving a ship a
woman's name, which ought to give lot of extra possibilities.

Please put [AFT], [RABT] or 'Tolkien' in subject.

This isn't right. This isn't even wrong.

Then the sister ship should be called Númenor, I suppose.

That would be "anna" (see Appendix E).

Well, if you don't know Quenya, "Anna" looks quite innocent Smile

Or one could do both at once Smile

How about the "Eärendil" for the mariner?
