Young X-Men #3 - "LifeDeath" (Writer: Mark Guggenheim, Artist:
Yanick Paquette, Inker: Ray Snyder and Kris
Justice, Colorist: Rob Schwager)

While Tattoo reveals a surprising new loyalty, the rest of the
team tackles Magma.

I'm conflicted about the issue. Or rather, I want to like it
more. There's some nice things in the issue, a bit of combat,
a bit of humor, but there's just too much that's... off, about
the characters they're supposed to be and the situation they're
in, and the situation as it stands with respect to the other
X-Books, and the world of mutants in general post Decimation.
I realize that some of this is deliberate, but the problem is
there's so much of it I'm not sure how much is deliberate and
will be explained, and how much is just wrong, and inexcusably
so. Maybe all of it can be explained, but the fact is, I'm
running low on patience, and the willingness to give the X-books
a chance to give me a pleasant surprise. Mostly, I'm just not
enjoying the mystery, I'm annoyed by it. I want to get to the
point and figure out what kind of book this is going to be, so
I can finally decide whether I'm going to keep buying it or not.

I'll stick with it a while longer, of course, but so far I'm
not feeling it as a whole.

Review: 3 stars

Well, that's it for this week folks. Next week, according to the
shipping list, there's two books. There's Captain Britain and MI-13
#2, and newuniversal: shockfront #2 (of 6).

See you next time...

I dropped it after the first issue. I gave X-Force two issues, and
X-Force is completely terrible.

Admittedly, reading X-Force is like watching a trainwreck. Heck,
I've continued to read issues 3 and 4 (but not buy them) for that
reason alone, just to see how stupid it can get.

Young X-Men, I simply don't care about on any level.

My main problem with X-Force is we're once again back to having zero
continuity between X-titles.

Major stuff is happening in them all, and they all have intertwining
casts, yet it can't remotely be happenineg either at once or even within
days/weeks of each other.

We're also back to Wolverine Overload where he's running around in black
leathers with X-Force, teaching at the mansion in Astonishing, lost in
Russia in Uncanny or Legacy (I forget which), embedded in some arse
storyline about his newly retconned son in Origins, whatever he's doing
in his own title and simultaneously is also in the New Avengers/Secret
Invasion storylines.
I can't remember a time when he was in more places to be honest.

Fallen.

It is looking like X-Force is going to have to be set after the
current Uncanny arc. It isn't just Wolverine that is at issue, but
also Angel.

In Uncanny, Angel lands in San Francisco and gets mind controlled
into being a hippy minion of the bad girl. In X-Force, he's
repeatedly been shown showing up at his house, just had his wings
ripped off, and just got turned into metal wing and blue skin
Archangel again.

The biggest problem though seems to be that X-Force in general
just doesn't fit with anything else. Scott's personal death squad
is more extreme than how he's acting in Uncanny. Scott's orders to
keep X-Force secret from Emma doesn't match Uncanny, where Scott
seems to realize Emma casually rambles through his mind. And that
Scott should realize Emma would probably have even less qualms
about rumbling through anyone's mind if she got suspicious.
Wolverine slaughtering and torturing Purifiers doesn't quite match
his behavior in his own book when he was sent to kill Mystique.
Cyclops' behavior towards X-23 doesn't fit how he was her defender
in New X-Men. X-23 being completely incompetent in killing
someone doesn't fit anything that came before.
