Just got my grades back from my final exam.
For the "objective" portion of the exam, out of a total of 65
points, got 62.8.
For the essay portion of the exam, out of a total of 35 points, I
got 33.
Total grade for the exam is 95.8 percent.
Final grade for the course:
95% which, for the school, is listed as a "4-".
Considering that I'm a mathematician and logically analytical
person, not bad for a theology course on the Old Testament...

I dunno... I guess I've just not been satisfied with sitting
around and trying to learn stuff on my own. Sure, I've learned
some new things since I left school, but there's just something
about spending the deliberate time studying and expanding my
mind.

Dr. Schnittjer actually, sorta, had the exam thrust upon him...
to a point. The seminary, in an effort to better gauge the
education they are providing to their students, started
standardizing some of the exams to make sure that everything is
hunky-dory and fair. The exam was a LOT of facts... the
objective portion was 119 questions along the lines of "what book
or books of the Old Testament would you find the narrative
concerning Bathsheba" or "Which book and chapter of the Old
Testament would you find the fall of Samaria?"
For that section of the exam, Dr. Schnittjer gave us a study
guide to help us know what we needed to learn... the study guide?
It was the exam in advance... exactly the exam... So, prior to
the exam, we had copies of the exam that we could work on, with
our books and notes, to come up with the answers ahead of time.
Then, when exam day came and we didn't have the books and notes,
we would have spent the hours necessary researching the EXACT
information we needed to pass the exam.
As for the essay portions... those were a bit tougher and more on
the lines of Dr. Schnittjer's standard thing... We still had the
questions ahead of time so we could spend the time in the
research.
The 25 point essay was "Summarize the storyline of the Hebrew
Bible in a clear, concise, accurate, manner. The storyline needs
to be decidedly oriented toward the mission of God and make
reference to the following elements: creation, crisis (primeval
narratives), covenant, exodus, conquest, kingdom, exile, and
return "
The 10 point essay was "How is wisdom presented in any ONE of the
following books: Job, Proverbs, Ecclesiastes (one or two
paragraphs)"
We had an hour, with no resource except our own head, to answer
both essays...
The exam was NOT an easy exam, but the Doc made sure we knew what
we needed to know to take and pass the exam. 'Twasn't an easy
course and, even with the study guide ahead of time, 'twasn't an
easy exam.

Standardized exams! Argh! Why not just post the answers on the Internet?
(Write a new exame every time, thank you very much. Although, I admit, I
frequently use old questions and alter them to make the answers different.
Change the numbers, make a less-than comparison into a greater-than, etc.)

Hmmmph. It's a different approach, I grant. Dunno if I could bring myself
to give out an exam before the exam date. I want students to study the
*material*, as the best approach to passing given that they don't know what
questions I'll ask. And, of course, the material itself is what I want
them to remember after the semester ends.

I bet!
Sounds like a good, *thorough* exam, though. Something students can be
proud of surviving, and the professor can be sure the students who passed
did so because they know the material.

Dr. Schnittjer shares your sentiments...
However, considering HOW the exam was written, you had to know
your stuff. It wasn't a list of 119 multiple choice questions...
the first 100 was just a list of names and, at the top of the
page, letters A-H corresponding to Genesis 1-11, Genesis 12-50,
Exodus, Numbers, Joshua, Judges...etc... through all the
narrative books of the OT. Your mission, should you choose to
accept it, is to match the letter (or letters) to the names. On
the "study guide" this took me a good 2-3 hours to research all
those names...So, when I got to the exam, I knew the stuff.... I
think, for a standardized exam, this one was pretty good.
>Hmmmph. It's a different approach, I grant. Dunno if I could bring myself

I would say that the essay portion of the exam did the "proving"
that the exam was supposed to do. It's one thing to memorize a
bunch of facts... it's another to put together a 3 page essay in
an hour out of your head....

I look forward to more courses from this prof. Not only did he
know his stuff, but he was FUNNY.
Example: We were working on the books of Samuel and Kings in
class one day and he stopped at one point and said something to
the effect of, "I need to mention here, now, an observation I've
made concerning some of the people in the narrative. If you take
a look at the character of Samson with his seven locks of hair
and the character of Absolom with his long flowing locks, there
appears to be a general theology in the Old Testament concerning
people with long beautiful hair." At this point, Gary stops
talking and rubs his hand slowly back across the top of his nice
and shiney bald head. Then, without cracking a grin, goes back
on topic...
Very dry sense of humor and a bit of a cut up...Thoroughly
enjoyed his tutalage...
