The problem is, the Catholic Church does not consider those things
passed down from the Pope to be "human-created" but that the Pope
has a direct line to God.

I say, anything created by man is, by nature, imperfect. Even divine
inspiration cannot overcome this limit.

And the fact that they change their mind on things only proves it.

Heya Tris ... technical question: which version are you using there? It's a
very nice modern translation without being "too modern".

The heads of the Roman Catholic Church do seem to try to change their
minds as little as possible once they've made them up. I notice policy
still changes over time, but this change is distinctly on the slow and
gradual side. {slightly lopsided Smile}

That "translation" is not, technically, a translation. It's a
paraphrase of a translation. Someone took the original texts and
translated it (into like the NIV or the KJV or something like
that) and then reworded it, paraphrased it. So it's a
translation of a translation...

It's called "The Message" Here's a couple of links:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Message_%28Bible%29
http://www.navpress.com/Message/HistoryAndFaqs/#05

Most scholarly work done is usually done with something like the
NIV or the RSV which are more direct translations with very
little paraphrasing occurring.

But "The Message" is really good for putting a modern stress and
impact on some very ancient concepts.

One of my favorite passages from "The Message" that really drives
home the point occurs in Job 38-41. God basically let's Job have
it for questioning him. Check it out.

http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Job%2038-41;&version=65;

Specifically, I like this part:

"Do you presume to tell me what I'm doing wrong?
Are you calling me a sinner so you can be a saint?
Do you have an arm like my arm?
Can you shout in thunder the way I can?
Go ahead, show your stuff.
Let's see what you're made of, what you can do.
Unleash your outrage.
Target the arrogant and lay them flat.
Target the arrogant and bring them to their knees.
Stop the wicked in their tracks—make mincemeat of them!
Dig a mass grave and dump them in it—
faceless corpses in an unmarked grave.
I'll gladly step aside and hand things over to you—
you can surely save yourself with no help from me! "
Job 40:8-14

Reading this passage reminds me of the movie "Bruce Almighty".

Okay... so... you think you can do a better job than God? Be my
guest... Wink

I agree. Very nice. Probably not for scholarly purposes, but ... <g>.
