Post subject: The ashplant in Ulysses

Several times, in Ulysses, it mentions that Stephen is carrying an
"ashplant".

What exactly is an "ashplant"? And why is Stephen carrying one around with
him all day?

I actually don't know, but I've always imagined it as a walking-stick
or some kind of staff... English is not my mother tongue, so it's very
likely that I'm wrong about this.

You are correct - the item is a walking stick made from ash, which is
a wood.
