I'm a but puzzled by the part saying that Swedes find nynorsk easier to
understand than bokmål. That isn't my experience. But then of course, I'm
from Scania, which was Danish once... My Finnish ancestors have a much
longer Swedish history than my Scanian ones.

You can take a look at a brief presentation of the results on the site
below. The study was generally conducted on the extent to which
youngsters can understand the other languages, and all the results are
quite interesting.

As to the last question, I can't say because the source didn't say.

Regarding the closeness of the languages, again I can't say
because I don't know any of them. However, I think the
presentation of the tree may distort the perception of the
relation of the languages. Actually, I don't think such trees of
language descent are meant to say anything about how close the
languages might be. In the diagram above, if you momentarily
ignore the Icelandic branch and Faroese, then the three remaining
languages appear at equivalent positions with respect to North
Germanic; the diagram says nothing about how close they are to
each other.

Since the research was done at the University of Lund, I realize I must take
it very seriously... yes, I see that Swedes from Sweden (unlike Fenno-Swedes
and Danes) have a marginally better understanding of nynorsk than of the
Danish-influenced bokmål. I'm amazed. Shows how informed we Scanians still
are by our Danish past, I suppose.
I also saw that Norwegians are better at understanding the languages of
their neighbouring countries that Danes and Sawedes, and that, furthermore,
their language(s) is/are understood by more neighburs than Danish or
Swedish. That does not surprise me. As someone once said, Norwegian is
really "Danish pronounced in Swedish".

But I entertain them first! With entrail-balloon animals.
But I have a funny little car! That I run them over with.
