I've made a truly wonderful discovery, thanks to bigshot reviewers in
the Times and NYRB who discovered it first: "The Discovery of France"
by historian Graham Robb. It's fantastic, in many senses of the word,
and also very, very *funny*. Prepare to have some odd things suddenly
make sense -- like, why the French are so damn prissy and protective
about their language (hint: according to Robb, it has not even yet
completely replaced the thousands of dialects spoken over the entire
country until very recently).

And now the EU has ordered them to stop persecuting minority languages.
